Could Colin Kaepernick join Los Angeles Chargers coaching staff with Jim Harbaugh?

The former NFL quarterback may yet have a path back to the league, but not as a player and that seems to be something his former coach is very interested in.

It would be safe to say that Colin Kaepernick and Jim Harbaugh have a history. Indeed, it was the latter who was the coach of the San Francisco 49ers when the former established himself as one of the NFL’s premier signal callers. Since that time, the newly appointed Los Angeles Chargers coach has continued to sing the praises of the player he used to coach. Is there more to come?

Jim Harbaugh eyes Colin Kaepernick as assistant coach

As mentioned above, Jim Harbaugh and Colin Kaepernick know each other well, and to that end, it comes as no surprise that the Los Angeles Chargers coach is said to be interested in offering his former quarterback a coaching job with the Chargers. Speaking with USA Today, Harbaugh admitted that if Kaepernick wanted to come, he’d be happy to have him on board. “If that was ever the path he was to take, I think that would be tremendous,” Harbaugh said. “He’d be a tremendous coach, if that’s the path he chose.”

As for Kaepernick himself, there’s been no official word that the 36-year-old wants to move into coaching and one could be forgiven for having doubts about that notion, after he recently stated that he’d like to play flag football for Team USA in the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. Yet, it also has to be said that by then Kaepernick would be 41 years old, and given his openly stated desire to find a way back into the NFL, it could be that we see him taking Harbaugh up on his offer.

Nonetheless, speculation aside, what we do know is that the pair have in fact been in contact about the possibility of working together once more as the Chargers coach explained. “Yeah, we talked a little bit about it,” Harbaugh disclosed. “He’s considering it. He was out of the country. He said he was going to get back to me. We haven’t reconnected since then. That was early, early in the year.” For the moment we can only wait and watch, but as a player who threw for 12,271 yards, 72 touchdowns, and 30 interceptions across 69 games (58 starts) leaving him with a career 88.9 passer rating, Kaepernick’s value can’t be understated and we imagine that’s something Harbaugh knows. Stay tuned.
