Update:

As the Dallas Cowboys deal with a hold-in by their star edge rusher Micah Parsons, the All-Pro linebacker has also been dealing with back tightness.

The good news is that Parsons has been medically cleared to return, but questions remain about whether he’ll suit up for the season opener.

Micah Parsons update: Health cleared, contract clouds linger for Cowboys

The Cowboys will open up the regular NFL season with the first game of the year on Thursday, September 4 against NFC East rivals and Super Bowl defending champions Philadelphia Eagles. Parsons is healthy, but whether or not he suits up will be up to him amid stalled contract negotiations and after requesting a trade earlier this month.

Head coach Brian Schottenheimer remains optimistic, though Parsons has yet to commit to playing.

We want him out there as soon as possible and when he’s feeling up to it, and all those things, is a big factor into it,” Schottenheimer said.

Every day that he can get out there and get reps would be great, but I do think very strongly that him being around has helped him,” Schottenheimer said. “Doing some of the walkthroughs and things like that, it does help. There’s communication, there’s signals that come from sideline, there’s communication from player to player that he’s getting all those things. But the best way to get good at football is to play football so I would say as soon as possible would be the desired effect.”

While teammate, cornerback Trevon Diggs, confirmed that Parsons had been dealing with back tightness, an MRI came back clean. For now, Parsons’ health isn’t the issue, but his relationship with the Cowboys front office may determine if and when he takes the field.

“Do I think he would play 75 plays and every play? Probably not,” Schottenheimer said. “I don’t think that that’s real. But I do think that he can be very disruptive like we all know.”
