The Cowboys made a surprising cut on Tuesday when the team had to cut their roster down to 53, but that player may not have seen his last day in Dallas yet.

Update:

On Tuesday, the NFL teams had to cut their rosters down to 53 players, and the Dallas Cowboys made one surprising cut. Still, we know the rosters at this point aren’t actually final, and there’s a good chance one fan favorite will be returning to the squad.

Why Cowboys fans shouldn’t panic over preseason star’s cut

The Cowboys’ initial 53-man roster included a surprising cut: undrafted rookie cornerback Zion Childress, who had emerged as a preseason standout and even pushed for the starting nickel role.

The team released Andrew Booth and Childress in order to make room after claiming Trikweze Bridges and Reddy Steward off waivers. Childress’ release confused fans. He was a fan favorite during the preseason and showed true potential. But the move may not be permanent.

According to reports, the Cowboys intend to sign Childress to their practice squad if he clears waivers. The challenge is that he must go unclaimed by other teams before Dallas can bring him back. And if he does return, the team would need to release someone from its current 16-man practice squad to make space.

The waiver period is just 24 hours, so the Cowboys should know relatively soon whether or not Childress clears them.
