Cowboys 24 vs 30 49ers, summary: score, stats, highlights | NFL Week 8
Cowboys @ 49ers LIVE
The Niners and Cowboys were both desperate for wins coming into their Sunday Night Football game tonight. They were both coming off tough losses at home. Add that to an already heated rivalry, and you've got the recipe for an intriguing game.
The Cowboys led the first half and were up 10-6 at halftime but Brock Purdy and the Niners led a comeback with three straight touchdowns by rookie RB Isaac Guerendo, TE George Kittle, and Purdy himself. Dallas tried to make another comeback of their own with two straight touchdowns by wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, but it was too late in the game and they couldn't manage to get the job done when Prescott threw four straight incomplete passes. The Niners pulled off the 30-24 win to beat the Cowboys for the fourth straight match.

One thing missing from giant George Kittle head in Santa Clara...
Just next to Levi's Stadium sits the Hilton Santa Clara Hotel, and at the moment, there is a giant Geroge Kittle head sitting atop it. But there's just one thing missing...
Kittle's hair on the top of his head. If you're wondering why the heck that is, well, it's all marketing. DirecTV's campaign "Nothing On Your Roof" is meant to show customers that DirecTV does not rewuire a big, ugly satellite dish on their roof. They partnered with Kittle back in August.
The real Kittle is inside the stadium and ready to play through an injury to take on the Cowboys.
National TE Day
Today is National Tight Ends Day, and to finish up the Sunday games, we have a matchup of two talented tight ends in Cowboys Jake Ferguson and 49ers George Kittle.
As we're just 15 minutes away from kickoff, here's who will be singing the national anthem ahead of the game coming up.
Cowboys have work cut out with Jordan Mason
The Cowboys' run defense has been one of their biggest issues since last year. Although this season, their problems in that area have been significantly worse at home than on the road, their matchup with Niners running back Jordan Mason is going to give them a challenge.
Mason is second in the league in rushing yards with 667 and the Niners are likely to rely on him a lot tonight considering all the injuries to their receivers. Through six games, the Cowboys have given up an average of 143.17 rushing yards per game to their opponents. They are going to have to get that under control if they want to contain Mason.
With the news that Dallas Cowboys RB Rico Dowdle will miss the Cowboys game vs the 49ers this week due to a sudden illness, it's a relief to know they've FINALLY activated Dalvin Cook from the practice squad to the active roster. Not that he'll be a big game-changer, but at least it's something.
Not the same Purdy
San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy struggled early this season and it's clear he's missing his all-star cast. Last season, he led the league with a quarterback rating of 113 andd this year, he's got a QBR of 91.2. That's thanks in large part to his touchdown to interception ratio this season so far: nine touchdowns to seven interceptions. Last year, that ratio was 31:11, so it's a significant drop.
“I track them pretty good and you could see some of this coming last year,” an advance scout told the Washington Post. “When things aren’t great around him, the quarterback has problems. He’s holding the ball too long and he’s falling in love with keeping it himself. … I mean, he’s not a terrible athlete, but no way should he be running this much. He and the coach have trouble playing from behind."
“He’s having a harder time finding the open guy with all the injuries,” the scout said. “We feel like you can get to him more by blitzing and playing man [coverage], and kind of rattle him and [mess up] his timing that way. There’s something to that Super Bowl hangover, now, too. I’ve seen that firsthand, and I don’t think that’s a great locker room this year, either. They’ve got a really top-heavy roster, with some red carpet guys and then a bunch of key guys making the minimum. And they’ve let that defense go and made some weird hires on that side of the ball and [messed up] some of their evaluations on the defensive line. So [Purdy] isn’t always playing with the lead all the time, and that’s a big deal with a young QB.”
Matchup of the classic...unis
Tonight, the Cowboys will wear their traditional white uniforms and the 49ers will wear their throwbacks, for a classic uniform matchup.
What are the odds?
Although both the Niners and Cowboys have started out with losing seasons, the difference is that Dallas is actually worse than their record makes them look and San Francisco is actually a little better than theirs makes them look.
The injuries to the 49ers' key players almost made it believable that the Cowboys could pull off a win, but with Kittle and Samuel ruled back in, it's doubtful, even if they're not at 100%.
It seems the oddsmakers would agree. The Niners are a 5.5 favorite in the latest odds from SportsLine Consensus. The over/under for total points is 47.5
Injuries: Niners’ depleted offense vs Cowboys’ depleted defense
As I mentioned earlier, both the Niners and the Cowboys are dealing with several injuries to key players, though in the Niners' case, they're on offense and the Cowboys' are on defense.
Niners' injury report
The Niners have been and will continue to be without star running back Christian McCaffrey since the start of the season and just lost starting wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk to a season-ending ACL/MCL tear he sustained during their loss to the Chiefs last week. Fellow WR Jauan Jenninigs will also be out for the second straight week with a hip injury. WR Deebo Samuel, who was already dealing with a wrist injury before the last week's game, was taken out of the game after coming down with pneumonia. He is listed as questionable for tonight's game against the Cowboys, but is expected to play. The same goes for tight end George Kittle, who is dealing with a persistent foot issue. Defensive lineman Kevin Givens (groin) and kicker Jake Moody (ankle) will also sit out tonight

WR Jauan Jennings (ankle)

Cowboys' injury report
The Cowboys have been dealing with a growing list of injuries to their defense since before the season even started. Their biggest loss right now is edge rusher Micah Parsons, who suffered a high-ankle sprain in Week 4 and has been out since. There was hope that he'd return after the bye week, but he was officially ruled out earlier this weekend. Cornerback DaRon Bland has already been out all season with a foot injury, and will miss tonight's game again as well. Just a few hours before game time, the Cowboys were given more unfortunate news. Their lead running back Rico Dowdle came down with an illness upon reaching Levi's Stadium and has been ruled out of the game. That will keep Ezekiel Elliott in the game along with Dalvin Cook, who's just recently been activated from the practice squad.
Cowboys Week 8 INACTIVES

LB Micah Parsons (ankle)
CB Caelen Carson (shoulder)

Where the historic rivalry comes from
Although the Cowboys and Niners aren't division rivals, they've developed a historic rivalry over time.
It started in the 1980s and really peaked in the '90s. It stems from the fact that the two teams have met in the postseason a total of nine times, tied for the second-most in the NFL. In the '90s, they played each other a total of nine times, including three consecutive NFC Championship Games, from the 1992-1994 seasons. In each of those three, the winner went on to win the Super Bowl (the Cowboys in '92 and '93 and the Niners in '94).
The Niners lead the overall series, 20-19-1, with the Niners having won the last three (2021 playoffs, 2022 playoffs, and 2023 regular season).
Cowboys and Niners - Where they stand this season
The Cowboys are off to a rough start this season. At 3-3, Dallas has lost all three of their home games in embarrassing fashion. Coming off a bye week, their most recent loss was a 47-9 beating by the Detroit Lions that they'd rather forget. They've been dealing with a ton of injuries to their defense, but that's not the least of their problems as the offense has been struggling in the pass and run game and the o-line is full of issues of its own.
The Niners are in a similar position, coming into this game at 3-4 and also coming off a tough loss at home, a Super Bowl rematch with the Kansas City Chiefs. Much like the Cowboys, the 49ers are dealing with several injuries, though the majority of theirs are on offense and their defense is the one struggling to carry the team.
