Update:

The Dallas Cowboys defense is clearly bad. That’s not really debatable. But their loss to the Chicago Bears on Sunday wasn’t just because of the defense. The offense put up just 14 points to the Bears’ 31.

The loss wasn’t just to the Bears - it was to themselves. And quarterback Dak Prescott admitted as much.

Dallas started strong with an early defensive stop, but a fumble, costly penalties, and two interceptions derailed the offense after CeeDee Lamb exited with an ankle injury. Prescott admitted the unit “was kicking ourselves,” lamenting the team’s inability to finish drives and blaming the miscues for the lack of touchdowns. Tight end Jake Ferguson led with 13 catches but averaged only short gains, while George Pickens was largely neutralized.

“I’ve got to go look at it from the offensive standpoint,” Prescott said. “I know scoring 14 points is never going to be okay, and damn sure not with this offense, this unit, the team, the players that we have and, what, and six of those were field goals. Not acceptable, not to our standard, not anywhere in what we believe in and what we’re capable of doing."

“We were biting ourselves [in the foot],” Prescott said. “We’re kicking ourselves, and that’s the reason that we’re not converting to touchdowns and it’s the reason that we’re not getting first downs. It’s gotta start there. Everybody’s gotta look in the mirror and say, ‘How can I be better?’

Head coach Brian Schottenheimer echoed Prescott’s frustration, saying the Bears protected the ball and hit big plays while the Cowboys didn’t. The loss dropped Dallas to 1-2, with mounting injuries and a crucial Week 4 matchup against the Green Bay Packers coming up.
