We’ve known for a while that Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott would not be returning to the football field this season. During their Week 9 game against the Atlanta Falcons, Prescott suffered a partial tendon avulsion in his hamstring. It was later revealed that he would undergo surgery that would end his season.

Now that he’s had some time to recover, here’s what the NFL’s highest-paid player has said about his target return next season.

Prescott injury update

The initial projected recovery time for Prescott’s injury, which occurred about a month ago, on November 3, was around three months, easily ending his season this year. He had the surgery 10 days after the injury.

Since then, Prescott has continued to attend games, supporting his teammates from the sidelines on crutches and with a leg brace on his right leg. Now, he’s looking forward to the 2025 season and gave CBS Sports an update on his expected return.

“My plan is to start OTAs and start the offseason no restrictions, full go,” Prescott said. “That’s part in getting this jump on this surgery that we thought was inevitable anyways. At that point, just doing everything I can to be the best quarterback and leader of this team to help this team come in next year with the best outfit that we can.”

Before the season started, the Cowboys extended Prescott’s contract to a four-year, $240 million deal, earning him $60 million annually and making him the highest-paid player in NFL history. Before he was injured, he was having one of the worst seasons of his career, throwing for 1,978 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 8 interceptions with a 64.7 completion percentage (his worst since 2017).

If he is fully healthy and ready to go by the time OTAs start, the Cowboys will be in a really good place as they’ll need him to get back in form as quickly as possible.
