Dak Prescott is leading the NFL in this stat, and it’s not even close
Considering the Dallas Cowboys’ 1-2-1 record through four weeks, you wouldn’t expect their quarterback to top the leaderboard in this stat, and yet...

The Dallas Cowboys have endured a chaotic start to the 2025 season, including a wild tie against the Green Bay Packers, a loss to the Chicago Bears, and a roster already battered by injuries. But through all of it, one surprising reality has emerged: Dak Prescott is statistically the NFL’s top passer.

Why Dak Prescott’s numbers say MVP, but the Cowboys’ record says otherwise
Through four games, Prescott leads the league in:
- Passing yards (1,119)
- Completions (121) - a full 23 more than the next closest QB, Matthew Stafford
- Attempts (166)
That combination shows not only heavy usage, but also efficiency. He’s not recklessly forcing throws, either. Prescott has thrown just three interceptions, placing him in the league’s lower half in turnovers. He’s also taken only six sacks, suggesting quick decision-making and strong command of the offense.
I've watched Dak Prescott play football for 10 years, and I don't think I've ever seen him make a better throw than this. Absolutely insane.pic.twitter.com/E6Fde2AUV7

And yet… Dallas is 1-2-1.
It’s the ultimate football paradox - the quarterback is balling out, but the team is stuck spinning its wheels. Prescott just dropped 40 points in a primetime shootout against the Packers, but it ended in a tie. Two weeks before that, another high-scoring thriller against the Giants that Dallas barely survived. Consistency has been impossible to find.
That disconnect raises the question: are Prescott’s stats carrying Dallas, or covering up deeper issues?
Part of the explanation lies in the defense. The Cowboys currently rank dead last in the NFL against the pass, surrendering nearly 300 yards per game through the air. When opposing offenses are constantly scoring, Prescott has little choice but to keep throwing to keep Dallas in games.
The situation has also forced creativity. With CeeDee Lamb sidelined, recently acquired wideout George Pickens has stepped into the WR1 role and delivered, catching four touchdowns through four games. Prescott’s ability to quickly build chemistry with him has kept the Cowboys’ offense functional despite continuous injuries.Still, Dallas feels like a roster being held together by duct tape and QB heroics.
Which begs the question of how long Prescott can keep this up. He’s playing at an MVP level right now, but unless the defense wakes up or the Cowboys get healthy in a hurry, his numbers might become another sad stat line in the team’s book of wasted seasons.
For now, one thing’s clear: Dak Prescott is carrying Dallas. And the Cowboys are making it look way harder than it should be.
