This season has not lived up to expectations. He knows he can play better, we know he can do it and we are confident that he will do the right job in preseason to be ready for next year,” Penner said at a press conference.

Russell is here to stay

The owner shelled out $245 million to acquire the 34-year-old quarterback from the Seattle Seahawks, with whom the QB was champion in Super Bowl XLVIII. Wilson signed a five-year contract with the Broncos team.

The decision to have Russell here was a long-term one. We’ve seen some flashes in the last few weeks that tell us we can do better,” continued Penner.

So far this season, Wilson has thrown for 3,019 yards, racking up 12 touchdowns and nine interceptions.

“We saw glimpses of Russell in several games this year where even he accepted that he didn’t play up to what he’s used to. It needs to be better,” concluded the owner.

Seven straight seasons without making the playoffs

Last Monday, the dismissal of head coach Nathaniel Hackett was announced after the alarming loss against the Los Angeles Rams by a score of 51-14 in the game corresponding to Week 16.

Out of the playoff mix

Currently the Denver Broncos have a negative record of 4-11 and are at the bottom of their division in the AFC West, with no aspirations to reach the playoffs.

With this, the team has already seen seven seasons without qualifying for the postseason. The last time they did, they won Super Bowl L and the quarterback at the time was Peyton Manning.
