Broncos 20 - 23 Chargers Dicker the Kicker wins it: summary, stats, scores and highlights | NFL Week 3

The LA defense forced a quick punt, and got the ball back with 1:43 to go. Justin Herbert knew what to do from there. They would chip away at the Denver defense and with 5 on the clock Cameron Dicker nailed the 43 yard field goal as the clock hit 00:00. The Chargers improved to 3-0 for the first time since 2002 while the Broncos dropped to 1-2 with a second straight loss at the hands of a walk off field goal. 

The LA defense buckled down and forced back to back three and outs for Denver. That allowed Herbert to operate late in the game and he led his team into the end zone with just over 2:00 to go to tie the game up. Herbert had another 300 yard game, second in three games, and this was the most important completion of the day. Somehow, some way he was able to get this pass off and put it right on Keenan Allen to draw level. 

On the ensuing kick off following the DEN TD, it was the special teams coming up with a massive play to add to insult to injury for the home team and their fans. Nothing was going right, but the LA defense held Denver to a field goal and that seemed to calm things down. 

The Broncos got the ball back after the half, and kept the wind in their sails. First it was JK Dobbins breaking a 41 yard run to start the 3rd quarter, and soon after Nix hit Dobbins with a swing pass that he tip toed all the way into the end zone. They scored two TDs in a matter of four offensive snaps between the end of the 2nd and start of the third quarter. 

Nothing was working for the Broncos until the final two minutes of the half. Bo Nix came to life and that would end up sparking Denver going into the half, and coming out of it. He connected with Courtland Sutton on a 52 yard bomb on 4th down. Sutton led all receivers with 118 yards on 6 catches. 

The Chargers regathered and got into the end zone with his Omarion Hampton TD, the first of his NFL career, and the rookie had a huge game taking the snaps after the injury to his backfield partner. He ended the night with 70 yards on 19 carries and 59 yards receiving. 

That meant that everyone else was going to have to step up, and no one looked more willing than Quentin Johnston. He set up the first points of the day for LA, and did the same with this fantastic catch just moments after Harris went down. 

The Chargers were back in Denver territory again, but were dealt a tough blow when they saw Najee Harris go down and clutch his lower leg. It looked like a text book achilles injury, and if that's the case LA won't have him for the rest of the way. 

Justin Herbert and LA were driving early in the 2nd quarter, but Herbert threw his first INT of the season when his pass got tipped and then picked by Brandon Jones. While there were a couple of hot shot QBs featured in this game, it was a day that was decided by defense. 

The Los Angeles Chargers stayed undefeated with a third straight division win to start the season, but they needed all 60 minutes. Cam Dicker kicked the game winner at the buzzer to drop Denver and move the Chargers 3-0. 

It was an ugly start to the game for both teams, but the Chargers got on the board early with a field goal to start the afternoon. Quenton Johnston had a big game for LA, and for a long while he was the only one making plays down the field. This set up a FG from Dicker who would have his final say much later in the game.

LA improve to 3-0, and for the second straight week DEN loses on a last second field goal to drop to 1-2.

After a 41 yard run to start the half, Dobbins tip toes down the sideline, stays inbounds and takes it for a TD! It took all half to get into the end zone in the first 30 minutes. It took three plays in the 2nd half.

Denver starts the quarter from their 34 and he turns the corner and burns up the sideline for a big gain of 41 yards to start the half off with a bang.

THE SECOND HALF IS UNDERWAY FROM LA!!!

The Broncos couldn't get anything going on the offensive end but Nix turned it on in the final couple minutes and found Courtland Sutton on the 52 yard bomb to bring them back in this ball game. Nix is 7/15 fo 108 yards and a TD, and Sutton has 96 of those yards. 

They get the ball to start the second half. 

Hampton got into the end zone for his first NFL TD, and the Chargers are going to need plenty more of that with Najee's injury news. 

Quenton Johnston has had a huge first half, catching five balls for 77 yards, which is a good chunk of Herberts 128 yards on 10/20 passing. 

The Chargers were dealt a big blow when Najee Harris looks to have snapped his achilles. We have all seen that before, and I think we all know he'll be out for the rest of the season. Huge hit for the Chargers who have looked so good through 2 weeks. 

The Chargers were driving again early in the 2nd quarter, but Jones picked it after it got tipped in the secondary and gave life to the Broncos who had just 13 yards at one point in the 2nd quarter. 

This game got off to an awfully slow start. The Chargers got into FG position on the opening drive with this big play from Quenton Johnston, and that was just the start of his day.

Just a play or two after the Harris injury, his RB partner Johnston made this great catch inside the 5 yard line. The rookie is going to be the key man from here on out and he looks open to the challenge.

Chargers back at Sofi

It's been a long two weeks for the LA Chargers. They started the season in Brazil for their Week 1 "home game" against the Chiefs. Then they took on the Raiders in Vegas. Tonight they make their Sofi debut, looking to go 3-0 to start the season. 

New look AFC West

As we have mentioned, this is a new look AFC West. All good things come to an end, and for the Kansas City Chiefs, is this the end? They have started the season 0-2, and there have been whispers of the dynasty coming to an end. While Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid will have something to say about that, the Broncos and the Chargers look like they are ready to put an end to the Chiefs reign in the division. KC has won the division nine years running, but this could be the year that streak ends. The Chargers are already 2-0 in the division and a win today could have them as the early frontrunner in the AFC West. 

Mack lands on IR 

The Chargers defense has been incredible to start the season. That should come as no surprise considering it was the defense that carried them last season. Last week, the defensive unit to a hit as Khalil Mack was injured in the Monday night game against the Raiders. His arm got caught between two players and he suffered a nasty looking elbow injury that has landed him on the IR. That means he will have to miss the next four weeks, at least, and the earliest he can come back will be on Oct. 19 for the Chargers game against the Colts. 

Greenlaw’s Denver debut delayed 

While Nix is an up and coming star in the league, and the run game averaging 100+ yards through two games, it’s the Denver defense that is the back bone of this team. They are certain to get even stronger once Dre Greenlaw makes his debut in Denver, but that won’t be happening any time too soon. The LB suffered a calf injury in April and he reinsured it at the end of July. He hasn’t seen any action since, and was placed on IR this week. That means he will be sidelined until at least Week 7. Greenlaw spent his entire career in San Francisco before coming to Denver this offseason, and once he incorporates himself in the heart of this defense, the Broncos will only become more dangerous.

Star watch: Chargers 

Justin Herbert has been around for longer than Nix, but he is sort of in the same position as the Broncos QB. Herbert has been billed as the next big thing for a long time, but coaching changes and injuries have slowed his progress over the last few years. He’s in year two under the guidance of Jim Harbaugh, and Harbaugh says it’s his responsibility to make sure Herbert gets into the Hall of Fame. That’s a long term goal but short term, Herbert is focused on entering that conversation with Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, Joe Burrow and of course Patrick Mahomes. So far so good for Herbert who had 318 yards and 3 TDs in Week 1 and 242 yards and 2 TDs last week in Las Vegas. 

Star watch: Broncos 

The Broncos came into this season hoping that their second year QB was ready to make the jump from rookie to vet, and who better to take Bo Nix to the never level than Sean Payton. Payton was the coach that elevated Drew Brees in New Orleans and now the Broncos are hoping the to see Nix follow suit. Nix had a claim for the Rookie of the Year last season after a sensational finish to the season that saw this lead the Broncos to the playoffs for the first time in the long time. He had 3,775 yards and 29 TDs in his debut season. This season started a little rough in Tennessee. He went for 176 and a TD but threw two picks and struggled to beat the Titans. Lat week he looked better dropping three TDs and 206 yards, but the Colts lost the game, and he had a crucial pick late in the game. Taking his game to the next level is going to require Nix to perform in games like these. 

Last game: Chargers  

The Chargers followed up their opening weekend win over the Chiefs with a comfortable division win over the Raiders in Las Vegas last week. It was one of two Monday night kickoffs, and LA’s defense set the tone from the very start. On the first play of the game, Geno Smith was picked off by LA. The Chargers kicked a field goal to take the lead and never surrendered control after that. Justin Herbert had another steady performance, throwing two first half touchdowns which was enough of a cushion for the defense to protect the rest of the way. LA’s D kept the Raiders out of the end zone all night and ended up picking off Smith three times. LA cruised to the win in Sin City and come into today’s massive AFC West match up considered as a top team in the AFC. 

Last game: Broncos  

Some losses hurt more than others, and last weeks lost to Indy was one of those that will sting for some time. Bo Nix had a great game following an underwhelming debut against the Titans. He thew fo three TDs, but the Broncos defense gave up over 450 yards of offense to a Colts team that has been the surprise of the early season. Indy scored on their first three possessions but the Broncos hung tight and led 21-20 at the halftime break. JK Dobbins extended the lead to 28-20 out of the break, but then the Broncos started to spiral. Nix threw a pick early in the fourth quarter and that was just the beginning of the self inflicted mistakes. Indy kicked a couple field goals to but the lead to 28-26, and then Will Lutz missed a 42 yard field goal to put the Broncos up five points. That opened the door for the Colts to take the lead with 3:15 to go in the game. Indy drove it into Broncos territory and set up a 60 yard game winning field goal, but Shane Shrader missed the FG as the time expired, but a leverage penalty was called on DEN which game Shrader another shot from 45 yards, and he drilled it to win the game. 

We are live from LA 

Hello everyone and welcome to LA where the Chargers make their home debut today against the Denver Broncos in an AFC West matchup that has a bit of a different flavor than in years past. With the Chiefs stumbling out of the gate in the first couple weeks of the season, the division seems as open as it’s been over the last decade, and both he Chargers and the Broncos feel like they have a shot at knocking KC off their throne. LA comes into today undefeated after wins in Sao Paulo over the Chiefs and last week over the Raiders. The Broncos won their opener over the Titans but got their hearts broken by the Colts last week. Today they looked to rebound on the road against one of the top teams in the league.

We’ve got a division showdown from the City of Angles today. The AFC West takes center stage this afternoon, and things are a lot more open in the division than they have been over the last decade. The Los Angeles Chargers have looked like one of the best teams in the league, and today they welcome the Denver Broncos into town.
