Denver Broncos 16 vs 17 Seattle Seahawks summary: stats and highlights Monday Night Football | Week 1

Update:
SEATTLE, WASHINGTON - SEPTEMBER 12: Will Dissly #89 and Colby Parkinson #84 of the Seattle Seahawks celebrate a touchdown scored by Parkinson during the second quarter against the Denver Broncos at Lumen Field on September 12, 2022 in Seattle, Washington. Steph Chambers/Getty Images/AFP

The Seattle Seahawks won a heart stopper at Lumen Field to defeat former quarterback Russell Wilson and the Denver Broncos to open their season with a win. Geno Smith got the Seahawks going in the first half and the defense took care of the rest in the second half as the Seahawks held on to win 17-16.

Smith shines in first Week 1 start in 8 years

Russell Wilson didn’t have to wait long to return to the place he called home for a decade. After being traded to the Broncos in the offseason, the former Super Champion set his sights on a Week 1 win against his former team.

The Seahawks spoiled the former Super Bowl Champion’s homecoming by forcing two goal line fumbles in the third quarter as they clung to the victory after being led in the first half by Wilson’s incumbent Geno Smith.

Smith orchestrated a perfect first drive to start the game that ended in a touchdown to Will Dissy for the first score of the night. Wilson’s former back up was perfect on the drive, in the first quarter and only had one incompletion in the first half.

12th man turns on Russ

Wilson heard plenty of boo birds from the fans that used to wear his number 3 Seahawks jersey. From the opening coin toss Wilson heard it from the 12th man, and the quarterback who was so used to playing in that stadium looked flustered by the noise at times as the Broncos were flagged for a delay of game on multiple occasions.

A Denver field goal closed the lead to 7-3 on the opening drive of the Broncos night. Wilson and the offense seemed to move the ball with ease until they got deep into Seattle territory, but couldn’t capitalize on their red zone trips.

The Seahawks then marched right down field on their second possession, and took a chance on 4th and 1 from the Denver seven yard line that didn’t pay off. They would kick a field goal midway through the second quarter to stretch the lead back to a touchdown, but the Broncos would answer.

Wilson spent most of the first half looking for his tight ends or running backs out of the back field, but on his first throw to one of his wide receivers, Jerry Jeudy busted a 67 yard catch and run for a touchdown to level the game at 10.

Smith was nearly perfect in the first half

Smith would punch back on a seven play 75 yard drive right before the half that was polished off by a Colby Parkinson 25 yard touchdown catch to stretch the lead to 17-10.

The Broncos would get a final second field goal right before heading to the halftime break to make it 17-13 going into the third quarter.

Seattle D takes over in second half

In the first half there were six scoring drives on eight possession. In the second half there would be just one scoring drive on eight possession thanks to three fumbles in the first three possessions of the half.

Denver got the ball out of the break and drove all the way down to the 1 yard line. On 4th down first year head coach Nathaniel Hackett went for glory looking to take the lead for the first time, but Melvin Gordon fumbled right at the goal line and the Broncos came up empty handed.

Wilson and the Broncos would get the ball back quickly after a D.K. Metcalf was stripped and Denver recovered. Less than five minutes after their goal line fumble, the Broncos had another chance to punch it in on 3rd and Goal from the 1 yard line, but this time it was Javonte Williams who coughed it up on the goal line.

Broncos fail to convert on three red zone trip

The Broncos went to the red zone three times and got just three points total on those trips deep inside Denver territory. Flags and red zone inefficiency were the undoing of the Broncos offense who scored just three points in the second half.

The field goal would come with six minutes to go in the game as the Broncos were again stopped once they got inside Seattle’s 10 yard line.

After the Seahawks put up just 39 yards of offense in the second half, the Broncos would get a chance to take the lead with 20 seconds to go. It was 4th and 5 from the Seattle 46 and instead of putting the ball in Wilson’s hands to try to stay alive coach Hackett opted for a 64 yard Brandon McManus field goal which just skimmed the outside of the left goal post and the Seahawks hung on to top their former quarterback and the Denver Broncos.

Wilson put up good numbers in his Denver debut, going 29/42 for 340 yards and a touchdown, but Geno Smith stole the show passing for 195 yards on 23/28 passing and two touchdowns.

The Seahawks will look to carry the momentum into Week 2 when they take on division rival, the San Francisco 49ers next week. Denver will try to shake off their opening week loss as they return home to host the Houston Texans.

According to Bet365.com the Broncos are a six point favorite on the road, and the Over/Under is set at 44. I think Russel Wilson continues to dominate primetime with his new team tonight against a team that will struggle all year, especially on the offensive end. Take the Broncos and the Under tonight from Lumen.

as.com

Russ in primetime

Russell Wilson lives for primetime. He is 29-11-1 under the bright lights in his 10 years in the league. The Broncos have been looking for a quarterback to deliver in big games since Peyton Manning retired.

as.com

Smith's time to shine

Geno Smith is the incumbent at the QB position after beating out Drew Lock in a quarterback competition during the preseason. He was the Jets starter in 2013 and 2014, but has spent the last six seasons as a back up around the league. He got his shot to shine last year when Russell Wilson went down, and didn’t put up terrible numbers in his four games under center. He completed 68.4% of his passes and threw for 702 yards, five touchdowns and just one interception, but the Seahawks won just one of those games.

as.com

The Wilson era in Seattle

Russell Wilson was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks with the 75th pick in the 2012 NFL Draft. At the time he was known as a former baseball players that led the North Carolina State Wolfpack to a nice season in the ACC, but no one expected him to turn out to be the QB that he transformed into over the last decade. Over his career he has passed for over 37,000 yards, and almost 300 TDs with just 87 interceptions in 10 years as a Seahawk. He took the Seahawks to the playoffs in eight of those 10 years, and won it all in 2015 when the Seahawks defeated the New England Patriots for the franchises first Lombardi Trophy.

AFC WEST

There is not much doubt around the league that the AFC West will be the toughest division in football. Last year the Chargers were a timeout away from being the third team from the conference to go to the playoffs. This year Los Angeles  are even stronger and the  only team that wasn’t in the playoff picture last season was the the Denver Broncos who brought in Russell Wilson in the offseason. It’s a long shot but the AFC West could have all four teams in the playoffs this season.

DENVER LAST YEAR

The Broncos stayed competitive in the treacherous AFC West for the better part of the 18 week season, but with their quarterback situations murky at best the Broncos failed to make the playoffs. Denver responded quickly this offseason by trading for the former Super Bowl Champion, sending Drew Lock and a handful of draft picks in exchange.

Seahawks last year

Seattle’s season took a steep dive south when Russell Wilson broke a finger on his throwing hand in early October. Geno Smith filled the void under center for four games. He won just won game in that time, against the lowly Jacksonville Jaguars before Wilson came back. By that time the damage was done and the Seahawks finished the season 7-10, missing out on the playoffs for the first time since 2017, and only the second time in Wilson’s era as a Seahawk
