Detroit Lions 34 vs 20 Green Bay Packers summary, stats, score and highlights | NFL Week 4
The Detroit Lions went into Lambeau Field and jumped out to a massive early lead which was enough for them to cruise to victory on the road in Green Bay. David Montgomery shined, rushing for three touchdowns in the Lions 34-20 win over the Packers on Thursday night.
Lions bounce back from early mistake
The night couldn’t have started much worse for the Lions who turned it over inside their 20 on the third snap of the game. Jared Goff was picked off by Rudy Ford, but Green Bay had to settle for a field goal as the offense was halted after the defense gave them the ball with great field position. That would be a preview of what was to come in the first half for the home side.
The Packers would end the half with 20 total yards and just two first downs, one of them coming for a penalty on the Lions. Meanwhile the Lions eased down the field on four straight possessions, scoring three TDs and a FG on those possessions. It started with a big play from Jared Goff who found Sam LaPorta, and that led to a 24 yard TD reception from Amonra St. Brown to put the first touchdown of the night on the scoreboard.
With the Packers offense struggling, the Lions offense teed off on Green Bay, thanks to David Montgomery who punched in his first touchdown of the night late in the first quarter to stretch the lead to 14-3. Just minutes later Montgomery would enter the end zone again after a Jordan Love interception to start the second quarter. Just 17 minutes into the game the Lions posted 24 points and they were able to put it on cruise control the rest of the way.
Love under constant pressure
Love came into Thursday night with 7 TDs and just 1 INT which, statistically, put him among the best QBs in the league but the Lions gave him fits all night long. He was sacked five times and threw two picks on a night that he was under constant pressure. Love went 23/36 for 246 yards and a TD and his two TDs, but for the second straight week the offense really struggled in the first half.
Green Bay did muster a mini comeback, scoring a quick TD right out of the halftime break, and getting another one at the very start of the fourth quarter to cut the Lions lead 27-17, but they let an opportunity to stay in the game go to waste.
They stopped the Lions and forced them into a field goal with eight minutes on the clock but a leaping penalty on the Packers gave the Lions 1st and Goal from the 6 and Montgomery would complete his hat trick of touchdowns with a 1 yard TD run on 4th and Goal.
Goff ended the night with 210 yards on 19/28 passing throwing one TD and one early INT, but the real star of the show was Montgomery who had 32 carries, going for 121 yards and three TDs.
The Packers made a minor comeback, and could have had a real chance after holding DET to a field goal, but after a Packer leapt over the center on the FG attempt, the Lions got a first down and capitalized when Montgomery ran in his third TD of the night and closed the door on the Packers comeback chances.

Tonight's odds
The Green Bay Packers may be at home, but that doesn't mean they are the favorites in this divisional battle. The Lions are 2.5 point favorites in Lambeau tonight, and the Over/Under is set at 45.
I think this game is going to go right down to the wire. I expect points, but don't dare touch the over, so I'm taking the Lions to win it by a late field goal to cover the spread.
Last matchup
Going into Week 18 both the Lions and the Packers were in the hunt for a Wild Card spot, and it set up for a perfect primetime game to end the regular season. Unfortunately, the Lions were eliminated before the game even got to kick off but the Packers were still guaranteed to reach the postseason if they could beat the Lions in front of their home crowd on the very last game of the season. The Lions went into Lambeau and shocked the Lions, and it came at the hands of a familiar face. Jamaal Williams, former Packer, scored two TDs and sunk the Packers to bring an end to their playoff chances, and an end to the Aaron Rodgers era in Green Bay.

Jones makes his primetime return
The Packers run game has been almost non existent since Aaron Jones went down with an injury after Week 1 against the Chicago Bears. Jones was supposed to be the anchor of the offense after the departure of Aaron Rodgers, and in the game against Chicago he had 127 total yards, 86 of those on two receptions but has been absent with a hamstring injury the last two weeks. His absence was felt in both games, but especially in their Week 2 loss to the Falcons when they gave up a 12 point fourth quarter lead because of their inability to pick up first downs. Tonight’ he is listed as questionable, and the Packers would like nothing else but to have the man under the Green and Yellow sombrero back in the backfield for tonight’s primetime game.

The next generational QB in Lambeau
There aren’t many people, maybe even Jordan Love, who thought that he’d be having this type of start to his first year as the QB1 in Lambeau. The vacancy Aaron Rodgers left on the offensive end and really entire city of Green Bay may never be filled, but Jones has superseded almost everyones expectations after three weeks. He has thrown for 7 TDs, which is tied with Patrick Mahomes as third most in the league. He has thrown just one interceptions which is the least among QBs with the most TDs thrown and has ran one in as well. What maybe even more important than his passing stats is his ability to win games which he showed last week with the Packers backs against the ropes.

Lions back in the Bay
The Lions need no reminder of how much Detroit fans have invested into this season. Unfortunately, it’s not every year that those in Ford Field show up on Sunday and expect to win games, let alone the division. This year is different. Dan Campbell has molded this team into one of the most entertaining teams in the league. Last year they thrived off of their offense, this year it’s been their defense that has carried them through the first three games. The DET D held the Chiefs to just 20 points in Week 1 and last week they kept ATL out of the endzone the entire game. Tonight they will need more of the same on the road in a hostile environment.

Packers last week
Jordan Love and the Packers did something that neither Brett Favre, nor Aaron Rodgers nor Vince Lombardi had ever done. For the first time ever the Packers came back from 17 points down in the 4th quarter to miraculously top the New Orleans Saints after failing to score a single point in the first three quarters. Anders Carlson hit a field goal early in the fourth, and with Derek Carr sidelined with a shoulder injury the Packers D forced the Saints into a couple quick offensive possessions.
Love would then orchestrate two TD drive capped off by a 1 yard TD run from the GB QB and a late 8 yard TD pass to Romeo Doubs for the go ahead TD with 2:56 on the clock. New Orleans’ Blake Grupe had a chance to win the game with a 46 yard FG, put he pushed it wide right and the Packers hung on for the Week 3 win.

Lions last week
There is no need to stress the hype the Lions had coming into this season after their fabulous end to last year. Dan Campbell’s men finally started putting the pieces together, and the build up grew exponentially as we approached Week 1. Their opening week win over the Chiefs in KC made a statement to the rest of the league, as the announced they were contenders not just in their division but in the NFC. A loss to the Seahawks in Detroit derailed that momentum momentarily, but they responded with a resounding win over the Atlanta Falcons last week. The defense, which will alway be their Achilles heel, held Atlanta to just three points as they cruised to victory thanks a passing TD and a rushing TD from Jared Goff.
