Did the Giants just clear the way for Sonny Styles?
The New York Giants’ release of Bobby Okereke could open the door for the NFL Combine’s star linebacker Sonny Styles.

The New York Giants are expected to release veteran linebacker Bobby Okereke, which would free up $9 million in cap space while absorbing a $14.46 million hit in the final year of his deal. The move ends the tenure of a respected 29-year-old captain who logged 17 games, two interceptions and steady leadership in a rebuilding locker room.

But this decision is likely much bigger than just cap math. It could point directly toward Sonny Styles.
Youth movement is officially underway in New York
Okereke isn’t being cut because he can’t play. He was productive and respected. But the Giants’ run defense struggled badly last season, and at 29, Okereke didn’t align perfectly with a franchise timeline that is clearly shifting toward younger, more explosive defensive pieces.
With the No. 5 overall pick in the 2026 draft, New York is in prime position to land a blue-chip defender. And Styles, who many expect to go in the top 10, fits the mold of what this defense now lacks.
Styles isn’t a traditional linebacker. He’s a hybrid chess piece - part safety, part linebacker. He’s got elite athletic traits and versatility that modern defenses covet.
The Giants just watched their run defense falter and their second level struggle to consistently match athletic tight ends and dynamic backs in space. Styles directly addresses both problems. He offers range sideline-to-sideline, size to play in the box, speed to cover, and physicality downhill. If New York wants to rebuild their identity on speed and defensive versatility, Styles becomes a logical centerpiece.
Freeing $9 million isn’t insignificant. It gives the Giants flexibility ahead of March 12 free agency, but it also signals a philosophical shift. Why pay veteran money at linebacker when you can draft a controllable, explosive defender on a rookie contract? Styles would be under team control for five years at a fraction of the cap hit and with higher long-term upside.
Nothing is official, of course. The Giants could always prioritize offense or go trench-heavy. But when a team releases its veteran linebacker captain weeks before free agency, while holding a top-five pick in a draft featuring an elite hybrid defender, it’s probably not random.
