As the football world tries to process the firing of the New York Jets head coach, there is a growing number of fans who believe that the decision to move forward without him is not so much based on the team’s stumbling start to the campaign, but rather on his falling out with its starting quarterback, a man said to hold immense power.

NFL fans joke about Aaron Rodgers’ role in Robert Saleh’s firing

There is no way to sugar-coat the fact that the New York Jets have got off to a bad start in the 2024 NFL season. At 2-3, the Jets aren’t facing disaster but rest assured it will take some inspired performances, and consistently, in order for them to get out of the hole that they have dug for themselves.

As we now know, the situation in the Big Apple took an unexpected turn on Tuesday when the franchise announced that it had fired head coach Robert Saleh. The decision came on the back of two consecutive losses, including most recently a defeat at the hands of the still undefeated Minnesota Vikings on Sunday in London, England.

Now, while the Jets as a team have struggled, mention must be made of starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers and his performances which have been sub-par, to say the least. Of course, it’s fair to say that the pressure on the four-time MVP has been immense as he attempts to see out his first full, injury-free season with the Jets after tearing his Achilles tendon in Week 1 of last season, an injury that saw him miss the entirety of the campaign. That said, Rodgers has not looked the part in 2024, and unsurprisingly, that led to friction with his now-former head coach. Most recently, the pair publicly disagreed with each other after the coach questioned the offensive cadences following a heavy loss to the Broncos in Week 4. Saleh then appeared to backtrack on his comments, but it appears the damage was done.

It’s with that as the context, that we come to the fans who after Tuesday’s shocking announcement, took to social media to say who they thought was holding the smoking gun. As you can probably guess, it’s Saleh’s spat with Rodgers that many are pointing to as the reason why the franchise took the decision to part company with its coach.
