SUPER BOWL
Did U2 ever perform at the Super Bowl and when was it?
The world-famous Irish pop/rock band was at the height of their success in the late 90s and early 2000s and got invited to play at the NFL’s biggest game
Bono and his band played at the Super Bowl XXXVI Halftime Show. The game was played at the Lousiana Superdome in New Orleans that included a heart-shaped stage that the band had used in their Elevation tour. Janet Jackson was originally booked as the Halftime Show performer, but in the end U2 played at that year’s Super Bowl
What year did U2 play at the Super Bowl Halftime Show?
It was over 20 years, in 2002, the first Super Bowl since the 9/11 terrorist attack and the organizers thought U2 would provide a more appropriate tone than Michael Jackson’s sister. The band played “Beautiful Day” then “MLK” and then continued with “Where the Streets Have No Name.”
The show received positive reviews, but isn’t in the same category as Michael Jackson’s 1993 performance or Prince’s show at th3 2007 Super Bowl. It is considered one of the top-10 Halftime Show performances and the Irish band put on a great show despite the somber mood so close in time to the Sep. 11 attack. “Many Roman numerals down the road, I’ll still remember those shimmering moments when the banner dropped, U2 played loud, live and intimate, and the names of those lost in the Sept. 11 attacks glowed in the dark, lit by spotlights and projected onto the crowd,” wrote Tim Kawakami of the San Jose Mercury News in one of many positive reviews by music critics.
