Do NFL players get paid for training camps? How much?
As teams gear up for an exhilarating season ahead, the guidelines established by the CBA will be pivotal in deciding the preseason remuneration for players.
The National Football League (NFL) implemented a collective bargaining agreement (CBA) in 2020 that outlines specific guidelines for player salaries during preseason activities. The CBA’s Article 23 establishes compensation entitlements for veteran and first-year NFL players during the training camp period.
They get paid but how much?
Veteran players with at least one season of credited service are eligible for per diem payments during training camp. From the 2023 to 2024 league years, these experienced players receive $3,200 per week. However, the amount increases to $3,500 per week from 2025 to 2026 league years.
On the other hand, first-year NFL players are compensated differently. During the 2023 to 2024 seasons, these rookies receive a weekly rate of $1,850, which increases to $2,000 per week in the 2025 to 2026 seasons.
In addition to salaries, the CBA ensures that every NFL player is provided with room and board during training camp. Furthermore, players who have not yet established residence in the team city are entitled to housing between training camp and the Tuesday before their team’s first regular-season game.
The NFL significantly changed the league’s schedule in 2021, extending the regular season from 16 to 17 games and reducing the preseason from four to three. Thus, the 2023 preseason schedule will comprise 48 games, with each team participating in three contests.
As the 2023 NFL campaign approaches, which marks the 104th season of the league, teams will adhere to the guidelines set forth by the CBA to determine player compensation and accommodations during preseason activities.
