Does MetLife Stadium have turf or grass?

Although the Meadowlands Sports Complex teams decided to change their playing turf last year, there are still complaints about not switching to natural grass.

After years of mounting criticism from players, fans, and industry insiders, MetLife Stadium, home to the New York Jets and Giants, they installed a new field turf system a year ago.

What model of synthetic turf is used at the MetLife stadium?

The venue has opted for FieldTurf Core, a multi-layered dual-polymer monofilament fiber designed to provide a safer, more resilient playing surface. The turf is expected to reduce injuries, a key concern given frequent reports of player slips and falls on the previous surface.

FieldTurf Core, developed after extensive testing, aims to improve player safety by offering more natural footing and better shock absorption. Yet, some experts and fans still question why MetLife Stadium doesn’t move to natural grass, like several NFL stadiums around the league.

Currently, 16 out of 32 NFL teams play on natural grass, including teams in challenging climates, such as Green Bay. This shows that year-round maintenance of grass is feasible even in colder regions.

Soccer World Cup games are played on grass

Despite the upgrade, many remain cautious, viewing the new turf as more of an experiment than a permanent solution.

Also, there’s the upcoming 2026 (Soccer) World Cup catch.

If MetLife Stadium is to host a 2026 FIFA World Cup game, it will need to switch to natural grass, as that is a requirement for host stadiums.
