Does Rob Gronkowski really think Tom Brady could return to the New England Patriots?

Is there any legitimacy to the notion of the a return to New England for the GOAT? Who knows, but his former teammate believes it would go down well.

Though he’s not yet on the market, the seven-time Super Bowl winner’s coming free agency is the talk of the town, even for a former teammate who believes Brady’s old team would gladly have him return.

The multi-million-dollar question: Tom Brady’s future

For the past few years, the question of where Tom Brady will end up is consistently been raised. With Brady now 45-years-old and approaching the end of his 23rd season in the league, not to mention on the verge of becoming a free agent, that question is now more pressing than ever. Fans will of course recall, that the superstar QB actually retired ahead of this campaign only to backtrack on the decision a short time later, thereby ushering in his third season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Reports now indicate, that Brady may not return to Tampa after this season which as you can imagine has kicked the rumor mill into high gear. One idea, is that the signal caller could make a hero’s return to the New England Patriots, with whom he played from 2009 to 2019 and won six Super Bowls.

Rob Gronkowski talks up a Brady/Patriots reunion

To add even further fuel to the fire, Brady’s longtime teammate and friend, Rob Gronkowski spoke about the possibility recently and seemed to think the idea was plausible. “I mean, if Tom really wanted to, I’m sure that it would be all open arms to go back to New England. I would just have to say all parties would need to want it,” Gronkowski said. “But he has the opportunity to go wherever he would love to go. It’s Tom Brady.” The ‘Gronk’ also acknowledged, that the Patriots would of course be one of many teams in the league that would be happy to have Brady on board.

“If he wanted to go back home to the San Francisco 49ers, I’m sure that would be open,” Gronk said. “If he wanted to go back home to the Patriots, I’m sure those doors would be open. If he 100% wants to stay in Tampa Bay, those doors would be wide open. It’s all on him.”

The Tom Brady effect

If we’re honest, the very thought of Tom Brady more than likely elicits an image of him in a Patriots jersey. Despite his recent success with the Bucs, Brady is and will always be an icon of New England. To that end, it’s no surprise that journalists in the state have already started the conversation. There’s also fellow former Patriot Matt Light who endorsed the idea. On the other hand, the franchise has clearly turned a page since Brady’s days with the team, as evidenced by the signing of Mac Jones in 2021. In his rookie season, Jones spearheaded a 10-7 record in New England and got the Pats into the postseason. At present they currently sit on 7-6 and can make the playoffs though Jones hasn’t been at his best. That’s all to say, while we like the idea, we’re not so sure it’s actually going to happen.
