Dolphins 7 - 26 Chiefs summary, stats, scores and highlights | NFL Playoffs

After their first possession, the Chiefs were forced to rely on field goals which allowed the Dolphins to linger around, but in the end it was Isaiah Pacheco who polished off the game with this three yard run to put KC up three scores against a team who proved again on Saturday night that they can't score in the cold, or beat good teams. 

Mahomes, and the Chiefs, on the other hand, are no strangers of big games and this is a team that knows how to rise to the occasion. Mahomes won his 10th home playoff game which puts him in the same category with Tom Brady, Joe Montana and Peyton Manning as the only QBs to win 10 home games (Brady has 21, the others: 10). Depending on the results this week, the Chiefs may have to play their first road playoff game in the Patrick Mahomes era. The only thing that can spare them is if the Steelers beat the Bills on Monday night. 

For as much as the Dolphins struggled to move the ball all night, they were still in this game up until the very end. It seemed like the Chiefs were dominating, but they could never pull away and after this 53 yard bomb to Tyreek Hill tighted the game up until late in the fourth quarter. Tua ended the night with 199 yards on 20/39 passing as the Chiefs defense kept him in check and held Hill to 5 catches for 62 yards. 

Not a whole lot was going right for the Dolphins in the early going. You could see the team from South Florida was not as comfortable starting the game in subzero temperatures as the Chiefs were. Tua Tagovailoa didn't look like himself which meant the Miami offense didn't look like itself. This ball sailed on him as he looked for Jalen Waddle but found Mike Edwards instead. 

The temperatures were frigid. The grass was frozen. The ball was almost impossible to grip, but somehow the Chiefs made it look like another day at the office on their first drive. Patrick Mahomes hit Travis Kelce a few times, Isaiah Pacheco had a couple of big runs and the two time Super Bowl MVP hit his rookie WR Rashee Rice for the games opening TD. Rice had 130 yards on 8 catches in his first playoff game.

Of course they wouldn't have had this opportunity if it weren't for the roughing the pass flag, but a bad mistake from MIA allowed KC to stretch the lead to three possessions. MIA get the ball to start the half looking to cut into this 9 point Chiefs lead. 

MIA didin't get a whole lot going in the first half, but Hill did explode for both catches on the Dolphins two play TD drive early in the second quarter. 

Tua has 94 yards on 6/11 with a TD and an INT. Mostert picked up 28 yards on the ground and Hill has 62 yards receiving. 

Mahomes has 167 yards on 15/26 with a TD, Pacheco picked up 65 yards on the ground and Rice has been the MVP with 92 yards on 6 catches. 

Things looked like they might get out of hand when Tua threw this pick to Edwards, but MIA was able to hang on despite the costly turnover. 

It may have been -27 wind chill in KC at kickoff, but it didn't look to bother the Chiefs in the slightest. Mahomes hit Kelce a few times, Pacheco had a few big runs and Rice walked into the endzone untouched to start the night off on the right foot for the Chiefs.

The kicking game will most certainly be a factor in tonight's game from KC, but Butker knocks home a 28 yard field goal with ease and the Chiefs stretch their lead to 10.

Banged Dolphins D

The Dolphins come into tonight battered and bruised. The good news is they have everyone back on the offensive end after dealing with injuries to Raheem Mostert and Jalen Waddle last week against the Bills. They will be back in action tonight, but the real trouble comes on the defensive side of the ball. Miami has seven of the regulars on IR, and three of those are their top pass rushers. Deshaun Elliott, Xavier Howard and Jevon Holland were listed as questionable in the secondary but are expected to play. The real trouble comes on the front four, who will be playing with mostly second stringers with one of the most dangerous QBs in the pocket and outside of the pocket in Patrick Mahomes on the other side of the ball. 

News flash: It's cold

It isn’t just cold in KC tonight. It’s frigid. Whereever you are watching from or keeping up with our live coverage from, be happy you aren’t in Arrowhead watching it in subzero temperatures. It is currently -3 Degrees with the wind chill feeling like -20. Projections claim sustained winds of 15-20 mpg and gusts of up to 40 mph, the wind chill could get down to as low as -30 which would make tonight’s game one of the coldest ever. The coldest game ever, notoriously called the Ice Bowl was played on New Year Eve in 1967. The Dallas Cowboys went to Green Bay and played the Packers at Lambeau. The temperature in the Frozen Tundra that day was -13 degrees with a wind chill of -48. 

No place like Mahomes 

It’s been one of the most trying seasons for two time Super Bowl winner and two time MVP Patrick Mahomes. For the first time ever we are seeing his offense as the weak link for the Chiefs, and he has let his emotions get the best of him from time to time. Whether it be exploding at the refs after Kadrius Toney was called for an offensive offside, or smacking the bench in frustration after a Kadrius Toney drop against the Patriots. It’s not just Toney who is getting on Mahomes’ nerves. The Chiefs have the most drops of anyone this season, 44, which is two more than the Cleveland Browns, and that has directly led to losses like the one Marquez Valdes-Scantling dropped against the Eagles which would have put the Chiefs up 24-17 late in the 4th quarter. Mahomes has been Mr. January taking over under center in KC, but will the offensive woes be too much to overcome in a place where he has been nearly invincible. 

Phins facing a cold front

The Dolphins have relied on one thing and one thing only this season. Their offense was, at one time, on record setting pace. Tua Tagovailoa, Tyreek Hill and Jalen Waddle looked like an unstoppable trio, and when you add De’Von Achane and Raheem Mostert make up one of the most deadly backfields in the league. Unfortunately for Miami fans the offense has fluttered throughout the season, generally when the Dolphins play teams with winning records. The only time they scored more than 20 points against a team above .500 is when they beat the Cowboys in Week 16 and they needed five FGs to score 22 points. Tonight Tua is going to have to figure out a way to unlock this stingy Chiefs defense and he’s going to have to do so in the most difficult of conditions. 

How the Chiefs got here

The Chiefs title defense got off to a rocky start as they dropped their season opener against Detroit Lions, but KC shaped up winning their next six. Despite the early season success, this didn’t look like the same dominant Chiefs team we had seen in years previous. Their defense looked as solid as it ever has, but surprisingly it’s Patrick Mahomes’ offense that has been called into question, and we have seen the two time MVP let frustration boil over in the later stages of the season. The Chiefs finished their season losing four of their last eight, but despite the inconsistency in the final stretch they still won the AFC West for the eighth straight year.

How the Dolphins got here

The Dolphins were among the top teams in the AFC and in the league for much of the season, there was just one problem. They couldn’t win a big game against a good team. It’s been a problem that has shadowed them for the last couple of years, but this year it has been especially apparent. Despite that, they still had a chance to earn the top seed in the AFC late in the season, but were wiped out against the Baltimore Ravens in a battle of the top teams in the conference in Week 17 and then lost their hold on the AFC East to their division rivals, the Buffalo Bills, in the last game of the regular season.

Hello everyone and welcome to a frosty Arrowhead where the Chiefs are no strangers to winning playoff games. Tonight is going to be a bit different as temperature will be dropping to below zero in Kansas City tonight. Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs won yet another AFC West title to earn the right to host the first round of the playoffs, and they welcome the Miami Dolphins who had a forgettable end to the season. Now the boys from South Beach have to figure out a way to handle the the Chiefs and the weather to avoid another early exit from the playoffs.

It the AFC Divisional Round and the reigning champion Kansas City Chiefs look to keep their back to back Super Bowl bid alive against a wounded Miami Dolphins teams from Arrowhead Stadium.
