The Dolphins’ WR was on the wrong side of the law before Sunday’s win and made that known with his celebration. Now, he wants to put a positive spin on it.
While details about exactly what happened remain unclear, what we do know - check our previous report - is that Tyreek Hill was briefly detained by law enforcement officials for an alleged traffic violation on his way to the Dolphins’ Week 1 clash with the Jaguars.
Tyreek Hill gives his side of the story
When it comes to the more eye-opening details of the incident involving Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill, it is understood that the 30 was detained and handcuffed by police before the Miami Dolphins’ Week 1 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars. Reports also indicate that several of his teammates were present and even tried to intervene. Hill was of course eventually released and as we know went on to have a prolific performance in his team’s 20-17 win, notching seven catches for 130 yards and a touchdown. Cheekily, he celebrated his score by putting his hands behind his back after which teammate Jaylen Waddle proceeded to “handcuff” him.

As one can imagine, the press had one thing in mind when it came to Hill’s postgame commentary following the last-second win. Speaking with CBS’s Melanie Collins he appeared to be in a positive mood as he opened up about his run-in with the police. “Little did I know, there was quite a surprise on the way, man, but you know what, at the end of the day, dog. I’ve got a job to do. And my job is to come inside of this stadium and be great. ...I loved that. I was f------ fired up, dog. To see Jonnu, to see Calias. You know, right there in the heat of the battle with me, man. That goes to show that it’s more than about football. The brotherhood that we got outside of just football is amazing. ‘Cause those dudes were like really risking their lives for me.”
Hill also made mention of the Dolphins’ director of team security, Drew Brooks, though it must be said that his comments about the risking of lives are likely the ones that will draw the most attention as they seem to indicate that the situation was in fact very serious. Interestingly, Hill went further when speaking with the media, seemingly alluding to the idea that were he not who he is i.e., a player for the Miami Dolphins, things could have gone very differently. The star wideout then went on to reiterate the words of his agent Drew Rosenhaus who stated that he wanted to be a police officer before also indicating that Hill would like to work with the police to change the narrative surrounding the incident.
“I do want to be able to use this platform to say what if I wasn’t Tyreek Hill? Worse case scenario? It’s crazy,” Hill said. “I want to be a cop someday. I got a state trooper hat, all that. So I’ve got a lot of respect for cops, man, but, obviously everybody has a bad apples in their situation. I want to be able to use this platform, you know to figure to.. to figure out a way to flip this and make it a positive. On both ends. On my end and also Miami-Dade so that way we can team together and you know, do something positive for the community. ‘Cause that’s what it’s all about. You guys are here to protect us as individuals and you know I have a platform and I want to be able to team up with you guys. That’s all I got to say.” It’s worth noting that ESPN’s Jeff Darlington later reported that Hill was cited for reckless driving after which he got into a verbal altercation with a police officer which in turn led to him being handcuffed.
