The New England Patriots made a bold move last season when they sat Brissett and decided to start rookie Drake Maye as their quarterback. Maye made his NFL debut against the Houston Texans and became the fourth rookie quarterback to start in the 2024 season.
The Patriots hoped to give the rookie quarterback more time to develop on the bench while relying on Brissett to stabilize the team. However, with the team struggling offensively, they were looking for a spark and Maye came in and proved he belonged.

The Patriots’ offense had noticeably regressed, especially under Brissett, who had faced enormous pressure on the field. Brissett had been pushed on 47% of his dropbacks, the highest rate for a quarterback since 2006, which reflects New England’s poor pass protection. The offensive line struggled and the team’s overall offensive performance suffered.
Maye finished the 2024 season with 66.6 percent completion rate, 15 TDs and 2,276 total yards. The Patriots expect more from their young QB in 2025 as they try to strengthen their offensive line and receiving corps.

Drake Maye, the North Carolina alumni and the number 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, signed a four-year, $36,639,764 contract with the New England Patriots.
