Eagles star says Super Bowl MVP should’ve gone to him, NOT Jalen Hurts

The Philadelphia Eagles won Super Bowl LIX over the Kansas City Chiefs in dominant fashion, and while the whole team contributed, there can be only one MVP.

Update:

The Philadelphia Eagles shocked the nation when they not only beat the two-time defending Super Bowl champions, but crushed the Kansas City Chiefs to the tune of a 40-22 defeat in Super Bowl LIX.

It was an impressive game by the Eagles all around. Their defense shut the Chiefs out until late in the 3rd quarter, and the offense was able to score 40 on them, making it look easy.

For his efforts, quarterback Jalen Hurts was rewarded with the Super Bowl MVP award, an honor that’s given to the quarterback of the winning team much more often than not. But one of his teammates doesn’t feel it was deserved, because he feels he should have won it himself.

Eagles player thinks he should have won Super Bowl MVP over Hurts

Of the 60 Super Bowl MVPs in history, 34 have been quarterbacks. Hurts completed 17 of 21 passes for 221 yards and two touchdowns, plus 11 carries for 72 yards and a rushing touchdown. He also threw one interception and was sacked twice, but hey, no one is perfect.

Still, it can’t be denied that the defensive efforts in this game had a lot to do with why the Eagles were able to win in such a dominant fashion. Eagles defensive end Josh Sweat believes, in fact, that he should have won the Super Bowl MVP award.

Sweat was responsible for six tackles, 2.5 sacks (of six on Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes), three quarterback hits, and several pressures.

“I should’ve had it,” Sweat said. “I could’ve had it. It’s all good, though.”

It’s indeed quite rare for a defensive player to win the Super Bowl MVP. Of the 60 Super Bowl MVPs, only 10 have been defensive players, so the odds were stacked against Sweat as it was.

Whether or not Sweat will return to the Eagles for another chance at taking them to the Super Bowl and potentially winning the award next time around remains to be seen. He will become a free agent this offseason if he doesn’t re-sign with the Eagles.
