Update:

Louisiana Tech alum Milton Williams had a standout season, culminating in a Super Bowl LIX victory with the Philadelphia Eagles. Williams recorded seven quarterback sacks throughout the regular season and postseason.

Unfortunately for the reigning NFL champions, the Eagles will likely have to part ways with Williams. His rookie contract ended after the Super Bowl win against the Kansas City Chiefs, making him an unrestricted free agent who is now eligible to sign with the team of his choice.

Philadelphia’s financial challenge to retain Williams

The financial situation in Philadelphia makes it difficult for the franchise to hold on to Milton Williams for much longer.

The 25-year-old defensive lineman has a market value of $12 million per season, according to Spotrac. Effectively, this means he could secure a four-year, $48 million contract in free agency.

One of Williams' strengths is his fitness and ability to avoid injury. He has played in 67 of 68 possible regular-season games since being drafted in the third round in 2021. Additionally, he has significant postseason experience, having appeared in nine playoff games. In Super Bowl LIX, he shone with two sacks, including a forced fumble on Patrick Mahomes.

Projection places Williams with the Lions

A number of NFL teams are in need of a defensive tackle, and Milton Williams is expected to be one of the most sought-after free agents when the market opens on 12 March. Teams such as the Las Vegas Raiders, New York Jets, Carolina Panthers, San Francisco 49ers, Dallas Cowboys, Arizona Cardinals, and Minnesota Vikings are among those looking to strengthen their defensive lines for the upcoming season.

Williams' impressive performance and availability make him a top target. The Detroit Lions are projected to be a strong contender for his signature, potentially offering him a four-year, $50 million contract. This move could significantly bolster their defense, especially with the presence of elite edge defender Aidan Hutchinson.

According Bleacher Report’s Alex Kay, Williams’ next destination could be Detroit, signing a long-term contract with the Lions. The NFC North team faced numerous injuries throughout the season, which significantly impacted their potential. Adding Williams to their roster could provide the much-needed boost to their defensive line.
