Even Jerry Jones admits Cowboys are far from Super Bowl contenders
It’s been a while since the Dallas Cowboys were Super Bowl contenders, but that’s never stopped Jerry from telling people they are...until now.

Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones spoke to the media at the 2026 NFL Scouting Combine about the team’s offseason plans and priorities and the tone of some of his answers felt different than his usual responses.
There is in fact a whole running joke about Cowboys fans declaring “this is our year”...every year...for the last three decades. You may be aware, it has yet to be their year. Not since 1996. And at the heart of that is Jerry’s unrealistic optimism, his unwavering faith in his roster, and his promise of an imminent championship. So when he didn’t immediately declare the Super Bowl as a certain possibility, it was notable.

Jones admits Dallas flaws
During the interview, Jones was asked directly how close Dallas is to becoming a Super Bowl contender. His answer began the way you might expect, but it didn’t end there.
“Make no mistake about it, I don’t have a higher priority than to go and win a Super Bowl,” Jones said.
Jones went on to speak positively about the offensive foundation in place. With Dak Prescott leading the unit and playmakers around him, the Cowboys believe they have the pieces to compete on that side of the ball. Still, even while discussing the offense, Jones avoided painting an overly rosy picture.
“Now, I don’t want to imply that we’ve got anything set up or are blowing out the candles on the offense… we’ve got a lot of work to do over there,” he said.
In previous offseasons, Jones might have leaned harder into the strengths. Instead, he emphasized that improvement is still necessary. And then he moved on to address the real issue. When Jones pivoted to the defensive side of the ball, his tone became noticeably more serious.
“It’s a big challenge for us to be where we want to be defensively. … We’ve really got to come out and be sound.”
Jerry actually acknowledged a fundamental problem. Dallas’ 2025 season exposed defensive flaws that prevented the team from sustaining momentum and closing games. Third-down defense, consistency up front, and overall discipline were recurring issues. For once, Jones didn’t deflect from that reality.
Earlier in the same media session, Jones even suggested he would be willing to “bust the budget” to improve the defense, a clear sign that he recognizes the roster, as constructed last season, wasn’t close enough.

Jones has never lacked belief in his franchise. But belief without acknowledgment of flaws is hollow. This time, his message felt different. Yes, winning a Super Bowl remains the top priority. But instead of declaring Dallas is right on the doorstep, Jones openly discussed the gap, particularly on defense, that still exists.
Admitting you’re not where you need to be is often the first step toward actually getting there. Dallas hasn’t reached the NFC Championship Game in three decades, so this new realism is more valuable than Jerry’s typical rhetoric. The Cowboys may not yet be legitimate Super Bowl contenders, but for once, the owner sounds like he understands exactly why.
