Former NFL WR Robbie Chosen shares his opinion on Buccaneers QB Baker Mayfield

Baker Mayfield finished last season with the kind of figures that the great Tom Brady - the NFL icon who he has the impossible task of replacing at Tampa Bay, would have been satisfied with.

Baker’s best season

Mayfield, who joined the Bucs two years ago on a one-year, $4 million deal, completed the campaign with a passer rating of 106.8, 4,500 yards, 41 touchdowns and 16 interceptions - the best figures of his career.

Only two players finished with better figures - Joe Burrow and Jared Goff.

It’s been four years since the Bucs’ last Super Bowl triumph - a 9-31 whitewash on home turf in which Brady set and tied a host of NFL records, and picked up the MVP.

Former Jets wide receiver Robbie Chosen has been impressed with how Mayfield has adapted at Tampa Bay, and feels the 30-year-old is Super Bowl material. Chosen and Mayfield coincided during their time together with the Panthers in 2022.

Mayfield’s leadership qualities

“He was probably only signed up for a week and by Day One of training camp he knew the whole offense,” Chosen said of Mayfield on NFL Network’s Good Morning Football show. “He was in the building early every morning and took control, took command of the offense. Obviously we didn’t have too much time together but the time we did, we didn’t some big things together.

“I feel with Baker’s situation, he’s showed that sometimes it’s not always the player sometimes it’s the situation,” he continued. “Obviously, he wasn’t in the best situation then got to Tampa and flourished and showed that he was a No. 1 pick in the draft and he has that capability but I definitely do believe that he’s a Super Bowl quarterback.

“He has a strong arm. He has all levels of his game - even last year there was a play late in the season, I forgot who they were playing, but he did something intentional to get his team going. He knows how to get guys going. He plays with that energy and that chip on his shoulder. But definitely, I believe he’s a Super Bowl quarterback,” Chosen concluded.

The Bucs’ preseason schedule

The Bucs’ Training Camp begins July 24 at the Advent Health Training Center - three of those sessions will be open to the public: July 24, July 25 and August 1. To commemorate the new season, the franchise’s 50th in NFL, Tampa will hold a special 50th Season & Legends Day, with special appearances by Buccaneers legends on Saturday, August 2.

Mayfield and the Bucs kick off the regular season as guests of the Atlanta Falcons at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on September 7 then travel to Houston to meet the Texans before their first home game, against the Jets on September 21.
