Giants hint at QB shake-up as rookie Jaxson Dart edges closer to NFL debut
After an impressive preseason, Jaxson Dart has moved up the Giants’ depth chart and could see NFL action sooner than expected.

Rookie Jaxson Dart is hoping to make a big impact in his NFL debut season and may soon get the chance. Ahead of their Week 1 game against the Washington Commanders, the New York Giants appear ready to mix up their quarterback order, rewarding Dart for a strong preseason.
Although described as unofficial, the Giants’ first depth chart of the regular season shows Dart moving ahead of Jameis Winston to become New York’s No. 2 quarterback.
Veteran leadership remains at the top
Russell Wilson, a Super Bowl winner with the Seattle Seahawks in 2013, remains the starter for Week 1.
Meanwhile, 31-year-old Winston, the NFL’s passing yards leader in 2019 while playing for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, signed a two-year, $8 million deal with the Giants in March. He now appears set to fall behind the No. 25 overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft out of Ole Miss in the quarterback pecking order.
Strong preseason showing for Dart
The 22-year-old Dart went 32-for-47 passing for 372 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions in the preseason, while also rushing for a touchdown against the New York Jets.
Winston, who has more than 100 NFL games under his belt, was previously listed as Wilson’s backup on the initial unofficial depth chart released during camp.
Giants remain tight-lipped on QB roles
Head coach Brian Daboll has so far declined to confirm who will be the No. 2 quarterback. When asked by reporters earlier this week, he said, “Any roster decisions based on who’s going to be in the backup or who this player is going to be, we’ll have that out there on Sunday.”
However, many see the flip in positions between Winston and Dart on the latest depth chart, unofficial or not, as a clear sign the rookie could get his opportunity in the NFL sooner than some expected.
