Update:

The Los Angeles Rams kicked off their preseason on a high note with a 31-21 victory over the Dallas Cowboy, and now fans have even more reason to be optimistic. Quarterback Matthew Stafford is closing in on a return from a back injury just weeks before the 2025 NFL season officially begins.

Stafford returns to Rams practice

Rams head coach Sean McVay told reporters Saturday that the 37-year-old Stafford threw more than 60 passes without limitations and is expected to return to practice on Monday.

“He felt really good,” McVay said. “We’re looking forward to progressing him back to practice on Monday. It was a good step in the right direction.”

Will Stafford play for the Rams in Week 1?

McVay didn’t confirm whether Stafford will play in the Rams’ second preseason game against the Los Angeles Chargers on Saturday, August 16.

However, ESPN senior NFL insider Adam Schefter expressed confidence about Stafford’s status, saying on Get Up Monday morning, “If there were a game today, if their season opened today, Matthew Stafford would play.

Rams’ preseason and Week 1 schedule

With nearly four weeks until their Week 1 matchup against the Houston Texans on Sunday, September 7, the Rams appear confident they will have Stafford back at full strength for the start of the regular season.

Following their game against the Chargers, the Rams will wrap up their preseason by facing the Cleveland Browns on Saturday, August 23.

Stafford won his first and only Super Bowl with the Rams in the 2021 season. Now in the twilight of his career, the Floridian is unlikely to get too many more chances to earn another championship ring.
