Green Bay Packers 10 vs 17 Kansas City Chiefs summary: stats and highlights | NFL Preseason
The Kansas City Chiefs ended their preseason on a high note with a win over the Green Bay Packers on Thursday night. Matt Bushman had both touchdowns for the home side in the 17-10 victory from Arrowhead.
Rodgers and Mahomes sit
It was the final tune up of the preseason, and both Andy Reid and Matt LaFleur were cautious as to who to the put out on the field. Putting their stars at risk of injury in the last game before the regular season starts not worth it for either coach.
The two stars of their respective sides, Patrick Mahomes and Aaron Rodgers sat the entire game as the back ups started under center. Mahomes had played in the previous two games, while Rodgers sat out the entire preseason. The reigning two time MVP hasn’t played a preseason game since 2018.
Mahomes did come out for the first huddle, which was on honorary gesture to pay homage to the late Len Dawson who passed away this week. He came out for the huddle, but then let back up, Chad Henne take over for the first Chiefs drive of the night.
Buechele ignites the Chiefs offense
After swapping three and outs on the opening three drives, the Chiefs got the opening score of the game when KC took advantage of some good field position. A holding call just as the home side was approaching the red zone halted the drive and Harrison Bunker hit a 44 yard field goal to open up the scoring.
With no Aaron Rodgers, it was once again Jordan Love’s time to shine. He entered the third preseason game having played virtually every snap up until Thursday. The former first round draft pick played for the better part of three quarters in the final game before the regular season, and led an 11 play, 83-yard touchdown drive after starting the night with consecutive three and outs.
Henne sat, and the Chiefs brought in Shane Buechele who looked like he added a different dynamic to the offense. Buechele, who spent most of last season on the practice squad, went 4/4 for 79 yards including a 54 yard touchdown to Matt Bushman on his first possession to give the Chiefs back the lead.
Defense does the rest for KC
Just before half, Love led the Packers all the way to 1st and Goal on the KC 1 yard line, but Green Bay couldn’t punch it in after a false start made matters more difficult. Coach LaFleur and the Packers settled for a 23 yard Ramiz Ahmed field goal to tie the game going into the half.
The lone score of the second half would come in the first drive of the third quarter when Buechele hit Bushman again, this time on a two yard TD pass to put the Chiefs in the drivers seat.
From there on the Chiefs defense took control, which KC fans will be hoping they see more of this year after the defense looked dodgy at best at times last season.
Time to focus on Week 1
Love came out of the game late in the third quarter after going 16/26 for 148 yards and an interception. Samori Toure had a nice final showing of the preseason, catching six passes for 83 yards to lead the Packers receivers.
Buechele went 11/17 for 166 yards and two touchdowns, both to Bushman who ended the night with three catches and 73 yards receiving.
Both teams will now set their sight on Week 1 of the NFL regular season, which starts on the second weekend in September. The Chiefs will play the Arizona Cardinals and the Packers will open the season with an NFC North rivalry game against the Minnesota Vikings.

How long will he be on the field tonight?
Tonight's odds
According to Bet365.com the Packers are a 1.5 point favorite over the Chiefs and the Over/Under is 37.5. Whether or not Patrick Mahomes plays tonight shouldn’t hold any bearing over the result of the game. He will get a few snaps in the first quarter, or more but won’t see much time if any. Jordan Love, however should play most, if not all game tonight. I think Love leads the Pack to victory in the final game of the preseason, although I don’t think many points will be scored tonight. Take the Packers minus the points and the Under.
Week 1 matchups
This will be the last warm up for both of these teams before starting the regular season on the second weekend of September. The Packers will start their schedule on the road in an NFC North battle against the Minnesota Vikings. The Chiefs will open Week 1 with a road game against the Arizona Cardinals. Both games are on Sunday, September 11th at 4:25 p.m. ET.

Will Patrick play?
Patrick Mahomes has somewhat surprisingly played in both of the Chiefs preseason games, and not surprisingly played extremely well. For the last four years he has been the reference point for quarterback play in the AFC. He looks on track to lead the Chiefs to another season in which they will be contenders in the conference but he will have to do it in the best division in football. He was not tabbed as one of the favorites to win the MVP this year. The oddsmakers instead favor Tom Brady or Josh Allen to take the title of the leagues Most Valuable Player. When asked if Mahomes will play in the final tune up, Andy Reid told reporters “We’ll see.” Mahomes is a younger guy who will still be giddy to get in the game and take a few snaps, unlike some of the veterans around the league like Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers.

Jordan Love in the spotlight tonight
Rodgers will be on the sideline with a clip board and a headset while Jordan Love takes most, if not all of the snaps tonight. Love has been the incumbent to Rodgers for the last few years, but the 38 year old seems like he’s only getting better as he ages. That means Jordan Love is left with the brunt of the snaps in preseason, but little else. So far he has had moments of brilliance sprinkled in with a few mistakes you would expect from a young quarterback who hasn’t had much playing time. In the two preseason games he is 25-48 with 289 yards and has thrown three touchdowns and three interceptions.

Jobs on the line tonight
Preseason football is not just for getting the stars warmed up for the regular season. For some players tonight, their job, their career and their lives hang in the balance as they teeter on the border of the 53 man roster. One play can determine the football future of a player and that sort of tension always makes for drama on the final day of preseason.
It’s comes as no big surprise that Aaron Rodgers hasn’t appeared for a single snap of the preseason. Hopefully you don’t have high hopes of seeing him tonight, because head coach Matt LaFleur has already said that Rodgers and a few other starters will not see any action tonight. Rodgers hasn’t played a preseason game since 2018, but those preseason reps really don’t seem to be necessary for Rodgers, who has won the last two NFL MVP awards. Rodgers did say hint at the fact that it could be the reason for the Pack's slow start last season in Week 1.

Last time out: Chiefs
The Chiefs, like the Packers, lost their opening game of the preseason, but rebounded with a home win over the Washington Commanders. Patrick Mahomes played for a second straight game in the 24-14 victory, throwing for two touchdowns and looking like his usual brilliant self.
Green Bay bounced back from an opening week loss to the San Francisco 49ers with a win over the New Orleans Saints in Lambeau last week. Jordan Love played the entire game, and while his numbers weren’t great, the running game stepped up. Led by Danny Etling’s four carries for 48 yards, the Packers combined for 178 yards on the ground. The Green and Gold’s defense held the Saints to 10 points, and forced two turnovers in the 20-10 win.

We are live from Arrowhead
Hello everyone and welcome to Kansas City, Missouri for this showdown between two teams who will be considered among the top teams in their conference this season. This could be a potential Super Bowl preview, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves, both coaches will be much more worried about getting their teams ready for Week 1 than thinking about a potential run to SB LVII.
