Has a team ever three-peat in the NFL? Could the Chiefs be the first team to three-peat?

The Kansas City Chiefs are this generation’s NFL dynasty, and Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce and Andy Reid start their quest for a three-peat next week.

Whether you like it or not, Patrick Mahomes is already in the same breath as Tom Brady despite being just 28 years old and entering his eighth season in the league. It’s the highest praise you can give a quarterback and if he continues to win titles, and MVP and tear opposing defenses apart, he may just be the best to ever do it when it’s all said and done.

Mahomes in rarified air

He could cement his legacy even more this season by bringing Kansas City the coveted Super Bowl three-peat. Last year, despite having what could be considered his worst offensive year ever, the Chiefs became the ninth team in NFL history to win back-to-back Super Bowls. This year he and the Chiefs are on the precipice of doing something no team has ever done in the history of the league.

You wouldn’t bet against the Chiefs making it a three-peat given recent history. Since Patrick Mahomes took over as the starter in 2018, KC has been to every AFC Championship, gone to four Super Bowls and won three of them. Not even Tom Brady had that sort of start to his career, and if we are being honest, Mahomes is technically just entering his prime.

Should they win it all again this year, Mahomes will do something that Brady never did, and the Chiefs will do something that has never been done before. Of the nine teams that won back-to-back Super Bowls, none went on to win a third straight Lombardi Trophy.

History of the chase for 3-peat

The Green Bay Packers might have a gripe at that considering they won the first two Super Bowls, and they won the NFL Championship before the AFL and NFL decided to join forces and have a decisive one off game to settle who the best team in the country was. Technically they won three championships in three years, but they didn’t win three Super Bowls.

Of the other back-to-back winners, none have reached Super Bowl Sunday in their quest for a three-peat, although three teams did get to the conference championship. The 1976 Steelers got the AFC Championship, but lost to the Oakland Raiders to prevent them from reaching a third straight title game. The Niners had a chance in 1990, but the Giants beat them 15-13. The next and last team was the Dallas Cowboys who were on a three-peat mission but the San Francisco 49ers shut down their chance at making history.

The Chiefs know that history is on the line, and have been gunning for a three-peat since the Super Bowl celebrations Allegiant Stadum. “I am going to celebrate tonight, celebrate at the parade and then work my way to get back in this game next year,” Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes said after the win. “I am going to do whatever I can to be back in this game next year. Three-peat.”
