Has any NFL team ever finished the season without a win?

Update:

The only winless roster left in the NFL this season, the New York Jets have become the third team in franchise history to start 0-6.

With 11 games still to play in the 2025 regular season, Aaron Glenn’s men are now just over a third of the way towards establishing themselves as the first Jets team ever to post an entirely victory-free year.

A Fields day to forget

At London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday, the Jets made it six defeats in six by losing 13-11 to the Denver Broncos.

New York quarterback Justin Fields endured a nightmare afternoon, racking up nine sacks and finishing with minus-10 net passing yards.

The Gang Green faced a Denver team that is now 4-2 and has enjoyed three successive victories - including a 21-17 triumph over the reigning Super Bowl champions, the Philadelphia Eagles, in Week 5.

“We just need one”

Glenn, who is the first head coach in Jets history to begin his tenure with five straight losses, said prior to the game against the Broncos that breaking his team’s streak is “all I think about”.

“How do we get us a win so we can get this thing going in the right [direction]?” he said to reporters on Friday. “Because that’s all we need. We just need one. And once we get one, we’ll get this thing going right where we need to.”

What is the Jets’ worst ever season?

This Jets team is the first to start a season 0-6 since 2020, when Adam Gase’s side lost its opening 13 games on its way to a 2-14 finish.

In 1996, the Jets also began 0-6, before ending up with the franchise’s worst ever regular-season record: 1-15.

Only a Week 9 victory over the Arizona Cardinals prevented the Jets’ class of ’96 from joining the small, unhappy club of NFL teams that have gone a whole season without winning a single game.

Since World War II, indeed, only five teams have endured a winless season; the Cleveland Browns were the most recent to suffer this ignominy, when the Ohioans lost all 16 regular-season games under Hue Jackson in 2017.

No team has drawn a victory blank in the NFL’s current regular-season format, which sees each franchise play 17 games each.

NFL’s post-WWII winless teams:

  • 2017 - Cleveland Browns: 0-16
  • 2008 - Detroit Lions: 0-16
  • 1982 - Baltimore Colts: 0-8-1 (season shortened by players’ strike)
  • 1976 - Tampa Bay Buccaneers: 0-14
  • 1960 - Dallas Cowboys: 0-11-1

Can the Jets get off the mark against Carolina?

The Jets, who have not reached the NFL playoff since 2010, will now attempt to avoid a 0-7 start when they host the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, October 19. Kick-off at MetLife Stadium is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. ET/10:00 a.m. PT.

The game will be aired nationally on Fox. Your streaming options also include fubo, which offers new users a free trial.
