With his agent having confirmed the tragic news, it’s with sadness that we report that former Cleveland Browns player, Chris Smith has passed away at the young age of 31-years-old. Needless to say the league and fans alike have been dealt a blow.

According to reports, former Cleveland Browns defensive end, Chris Smith, has passed away at the age of 31-years-old. Having played for West Rowan high school, before heading to Arkansas, Smith was a fifth-round pick for the Jacksonville Jaguars back in the NFL Draft of 2014. After three seasons in Florida, Smith joined the Cincinnati Bengals in 2017 before joining the Browns just one season later for the total of two campaigns. In 2020 he joined the Las Vegas Raiders, but would only feature in eight games for the team, at which point he signed with the Houston Texans where he played four games in 2021.

Smith’s death comes as a genuine shock to the football world, with several players paying tribute including Browns tight end, David Njoku who posted a heartfelt message on Twitter. " Hometown hero and a brother to everyone. Such a kind soul. This is Heartbreaking.” There was also former Raiders QB, Derek Carr, who shared a photo of himself and Smith together with the caption: “Love you bro.”

How did Chris Smith die?

While there is no official word on a cause of death, what we can say is that Smith endured severe personal tragedy in recent years. In 2019, his girlfriend and mother of his child Petara Cordero, was killed after being struck by a car. Her death occurred shortly after the birth of their child.
