The Pittsburgh Steelers announced on Wednesday that they have re-signed one of the former players - Tyler Matakevich. The linebacker has signed a one-year contract to play with the AFC North team in the 2024 NFL season. To make room on the roster, the black and yellow released safety Jalen Elliott.

Matakevich returns to Pittsburgh after spending the last four years with the Buffalo Bills. The Temple University graduate was drafted by the Steelers in the seventh round of the 2016 draft.

The 31-year-old linebacker has primarily stood out on special teams, where he has played at least 60 percent of the snaps since his rookie year. With the Steelers, Matakevich had 77 tackles while with the Bills he added 55 and was the captain of the special teams.

What role will Tyler Matakevich have for the Steelers?

The Steelers are looking for depth at the inside linebacker positions in their 3-4 defense. The starters are Patrick Queen and Elandon Roberts. However, Matakevich could have opportunities by competing with Cole Holcomb and rookie Payton Wilson.

Last year, the Steelers suffered multiple injuries among the inside linebackers and the depth achieved now is precautionary. Despite everything, it seems that the former Bills player will have his guaranteed place on the special teams thanks to the modification of the rule.

During his previous four seasons with the Steelers, Matakevich recorded 77 combined tackles - 62 of those tackles being solo tackles. He tied the NFL lead with 16 in his final season. With the Bills, he recorded one interception, with 55 combined tackles - 33 of them solo tackles.
