How long will it take for Joe Burrow to recover from the appendectomy operation?

Right when the Cincinnati Bengals were getting started with their 2022-2023 training camp, news came out that their quarterback, Joe Burrow, is not joining them as he will be undergoing surgery to remove his appendix.

The 25-year-old who led the Bengals to their Super Bowl appearance last season, is expected to miss “a week or two” of practice, according to Dr. Tracey Childs, the chief of surgery at Providence Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, Calif.

Appendectomy: “bread and butter surgery”

“When he is comfortable enough to practice he can practice without restrictions. This is what we call ‘bread and butter surgery.’ It’s super common,” said Childs.

How long does it take to recover from an appendectomy?

A standard appendectomy has a relatively short recovery time, with players having been able to return to their normal lives within just a few weeks from undergoing the operation. Per Mount Sinai Health System, “most patients leave the hospital one to two days after surgery.”

In 2010, then-Chiefs starter Matt Cassel had an emergency appendectomy 11 days before leading Kansas City to a victory, and missing only one game.

So it doesn’t seem that Burrow will miss any vital time in the regular season at all, luckily for the Bengals, who determined Burrow’s condition a few days ago.

Burrow is coming off an outstanding season in 2021 where he led the NFL in completion percentage (70.4%) and yards per attempt (8.9), besides assisting Cincinnati to its first AFC North title since 2015 and its first Super Bowl appearance since the 1988 season.

Who will replace Burrow as he recovers from surgery?

Backup Brandon Allen will serve as the No. 1 quarterback in early sessions that start Wednesday until ‘Joe Cool’ is back and cleared to play.
