How many people watched Super Bowl 2024?
The figures were slightly up across all platforms compared to those from last year. Viewers had a number of options to follow the game.
Sunday’s Super Bowl LVIII showdown in Las Vegas made history in more ways than one. Not only was it the longest game ever recorded, it was also the most viewed. The game between the Chiefs and 49ers was timed at 74 minutes and 57 seconds - the longest Super Bowl ever and the seventh longest game in NFL history, including regular and postseason.
And more viewers tuned in than ever before - the record was set last year when 115.1 million locked in to see the Chiefs take on the Eagles. The numbers spiked at halftime when Rihanna took the stage at State Farm stadium in Glendale with an additional five million tuning in just for the musical interlude.
How did viewers watch Super Bowl LVIII?
Rating agencies expected figures for the 2024 event to be higher, but not by very much and their prediction was spot on. The Super Bowl has attracted a television audience of over 100 million every single year since 2010 and that trend continues. Super Bowl LVIII was broadcast live in the United States by CBS and Paramount. Viewers also had multiple streaming options available to follow the action such as YouTube TV, Paramount+, Fubo, Hulu and DirecTV Stream. According to Nielsen Media Research, Sunday’s event drew an average audience engagement of 115.1 million with about 39 million tuning in for the game itself, slightly up on last year’s figures - around a 5 percent increase in total viewership.
Usher’s Halftime Show pulled in 30.1 million households. With an estimation that at least four viewers would be watching per household, that sets the approximate number into the 120 million range. Samba TV, who published their Super Bowl LVIII television audience ratings this morning, roughly guess that total viewership for Usher’s performance, which featured special guests H.E.R. Alicia Keys, Lil Jon and Ludacris, was up by about 5 per cent on Rihanna’s show which pulled in an audience of 121.017 million - just pipping the previous record, 121 million, held by Katy Perry since 2015.
What was the total viewership for Super Bowl LVIII?
This year’s total number is somewhere around the 120 million-mark, according to initial estimations. The final number will announced on Tuesday. Most ratings agencies agreed that numbers were slightly higher, meaning that a new record was set at the weekend. Whatever the outcome, it is unlikely to beat the all-time US record - the most watched program in history was the 1969 Apollo II Moon Landing which drew 650 million viewers world wide and about a quarter of that figures in the United States.
Last year’s figures were revised to 115.1 million - the audience that watched Super Bowl LVII between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles. And while TV audience figures were up, attendance for the Chiefs-49ers game at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas was down - Statista report that 61,629 attended - down on the previous year (67,827).
Patrick Mahomes, who finished with a total throwing distance of 333 yards and 34 out of 49 passes completed, picked up his third Super Bowl MVP award, to join an elite group of QB with three championship wins: Troy Aikman (1993, 1994, 1996), Steve Young (1989, 1990, 1995) and Earl Morrall (1971, 1973, 1974).
