It’s been almost three weeks since the Kansas City Chiefs were crowned two-time NFL champions at Super Bowl LVIII - winning their third title in five years after beating the San Francisco 49ers 25-22 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. The game was an emotional rollercoaster ride in both teams put their fate on the line in overtime.

One of the key moments of the game was the coin toss which determined whether the Kansas City Chiefs or the San Francisco 49ers would receive the ball first during overtime. Referee Bill Vinovich flipped the coin which landed tails, giving the 49ers the option to receive.

Vinovich’s gold and silver two-tone coin used in both the opening toss and overtime flip was auctioned off by the NFL on their official website with a starting price of $800 and bid increments of $100. It received a total of 41 bids, selling for $26,300 when bidding closed Wednesday. The official flip coin was one of a limited run of 10,000 produced for Super Bowl LVIII. The coin measures 39mm in diameter and is plated with .999 fine silver then selectively plated with 24kt gold. The officially licensed flip coin is minted on one side with the official Super Bowl LVIII logo as well as commissioner Roger Goodell’s signature and the other side is minted with the logos of both the Super Bowl teams.

The overtime coin toss proved to be a pivotal moment in the game. The San Francisco 49ers won the toss and chose to receive the ball. It ended up being a controversial decision as under the new overtime rules, both teams are able to receive the ball even if the first team scores a touchdown. As it transpired, the Kansas City Chiefs received the ball second, giving them the advantage of knowing exactly what they needed to continue the game or win it outright.
