Few coaches have lasted the distance in the cut throat world of the NFL like John Harbaugh. He has spent 16 years at the helm with the Baltimore Ravens - and now, following Bill Belichick’s recent departure from the Patriots, only one coach has spent longer with the same NFL team - Mike Tomlin, who has been in charge of the Steelers since 2007.

The Ravens hired Harbaugh on 18 January 2008, the coach signing a four-year deal worth $8.8 million with a base salary of just under $3.5 million. In February 2011, he agreed a three-year extension for $12 million and accepted another improved offer from Baltimore a couple of years later.

Harbaugh’s last contract extension

Harbaugh guided the Ravens to their second Super Bowl triumph in 20212 - beating the 49ers coached by his younger brother Jim. He also led the team to three AFC Championship games - in 2008, 2011 and 2012. Those credentials prompted the franchise to offer the coach a series of contract extensions. He signed a series of one-year renovations between 2014 and 2017 before putting pen to paper for a three-year extension in March 2022.

  1. Bill Belichick (New England Patriots) $20 million
  2. Sean Payton (Denver Broncos) $18 million
  3. Pete Carroll (Seattle Seahawks) $15 million
  4. Sean McVay (Los Angeles Rams) $15 million
  5. Mike Tomlin (Pittsburgh Steelers) $12.5 million
  6. Andy Reid (Kansas City Chiefs) $12 million
  7. John Hargbaugh (Baltimore Ravens) $12 million
  8. Kyle Shanahan (San Francisco 49ers) $10 million
  9. Josh McDaniels (Las Vegas Raiders) $10 million
  10. Mike Vrabel (Tennessee Titans) $9.5 million

Baltimore owner Steve Bisciotti announced that Harbaugh would remain at the helm through 2025. The 61-year-old currently earns a base salary of $12 million - seventh in the ranking of the NFL’s top earning coaches.

A ‘players’ coach’ who is widely regarded as one of the best and most respected in his field, Harbaugh’s record with the Ravens has been consistent. He was named NFL Coach of the Year in 2019 and his loyalty to Baltimore is reflected in his overall figures - 171-108, and regular season figures: 160-99.
