How much does Kyle Shanahan earn? The 49ers’ coach’s salary and contract details
The 49ers’ head coach is one of the best in the business which is why he makes top dollar. Of course, the question is, just how much does he pocket?
When you consider the kinds of pitfalls that Kyle Shanahan has had to navigate in his six seasons in the Bay Area, it becomes very clear that we’re talking about a top-tier coach. From injuries to Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance to having to cover with C.J. Beathard, Nick Mullens and Brock Purdy, the Niners’ coach has proven himself to be as industrious as he is visionary. To that end, we’re taking a look at just what he’s worth to the franchise.
Kyle Shanahan’s salary
As we’ve already established, Kyle Shanahan is one of the best coaches in the NFL, a notion that is evidenced by the fact that he has guided the San Francisco 49ers to the NFC championship game in three of his six seasons with the team. Indeed, the conference championship game that the Niners will play against the Detroit Lions on Sunday will be the team’s third consecutive appearance. With that kind of consistency, one has to assume that Shanahan earns a more than decent paycheck. On the other hand, one can also assume that he will be itching to go one better than he and the 49ers have managed to so far i.e., win the Super Bowl.
Regardless, when it comes to Shanhan’s contract what we know is that the 44-year-old signed a six-year contract extension back in 2020 which will tie him to the franchise through the 2025 season. While there is no official consensus on exactly what Shanahan makes annually - coach’s salaries are not typically made public - there have been reports that place his annual paycheck at approximately $10 million. Assuming that figure is accurate, then we can safely say that the 49ers’ coach is among the higher earners in the league, with the Rams’ Sean McVay, the Seahawks’ Pete Carroll, Chiefs coach Andy Reid, and the now former Patriots’ Bill Belichick all said to be earning between $12 million and $15 million per season.
Is Kyle Shanahan worth it?
If we’re honest, yes he is.
Now, while it may be fair to say that those coaches have all got more success under their belts than Shanahan, it would be unfair to say that what he has achieved in his career doesn’t make him worthy of a place among them. Since taking the job in 2016, Shanahan has taken the 49ers to two division titles, three NFC championship games, and one Super Bowl. Today, the San Francisco 49ers boast one of the league’s best offensives and that’s despite the countless problems that the team had at the position due to injuries. What remains to be seen is whether the Niners and their coach can finally clear that last hurdle, an act that would undoubtedly place Shanahan among the all-time greats of the game.
