For months before the season started, the fate of quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo with the San Francisco 49ers had been up in the air. With a new contract signed in August, the matter was somewhat settled, but with when the 49ers lost Trey Lance for the season, his future cleared up.

In August, the 30-year-old inked a restructured one-year contract for him to stay with the team as Lance’s backup, and included a no-trade clause that meant he would have to consent to the trade.

The deal provided for $6.5 million in guaranteed money and a host of incentives that could push the amount much higher, especially if he becomes the team’s starting quarterback. Now that he has taken over Lance’s duties, he has already benefited from his uniquely structured contract.

News from San Francisco is that the team and their starting QB are open to continue together next season.

On top of his base salary of $6.5 million, Garropolo will also receive money (around $29,000 per game) simply for being included in the active roster. This could amount to a maximum of $500,000.

The deal provides for a bonus of a quarter of a million if he acts as a starter who takes at least 25% of the snaps. For example, beecause of this clause, he made $250,000 in Week 2. If he manages to escape injury or illness, he could continue earning this amount in the next 15 games

Garropolo also stands to earn $100,000 for every game that he wins, which is already up to seven.

The deal also includes a variety of bonuses if he starts for games in the postseason.

All told, his contract can bring him a maximum value of $15.45 million, an amount that the 49ers were probably not expecting to actually pay out.

Jimmy G’s deal ended up being more lucrative for him for the moment, but the 49ers benefited from it as well. Holding on to the two-time Super Bowl champion meant they were not caught short-handed when the young quarterback they had pinned their hopes on was unexpectedly sidelined so quickly and so early in the new season.
