Indianapolis Colts 27 vs 13 Philadelphia Eagles summary, stats, and highlights | NFL Preseason
The Indianapolis Colts won their preseason finale over the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday night from Lincoln Financial Field. Rookie Anthony Richardson led the Colts on two touchdown drives in the first half to secure the 27-13 win.
Richardson’s last warm up
The Thursday Night kickoff started with a bang right off the bat as Devon Allen returned the opening kick 73 yards setting up a Trey Sermon one yard touchdown in the early minutes of the game.
Anthony Richardson got the start after being named Indy’s QB1 following his preseason opener, and the former Florida Gator had flashes of brilliance as he showed his explosiveness on the ground and in through the air.
He played the entire first half and led the Colts into the end zone twice. The first one came after a turnover on downs in which Indy got the ball right around mid field. That drive was finished off by Deon Jackson’s three yard run.
Minshew makes a statement
The second drive started from the IND 25 and Richardson got a chance to build up a long drive that was topped off with Evan Hull’s one yard TD. He ended the night 6/17 for 78 yards and 38 yards rushing, but had a better night than his numbers would suggest.
Tanner McKee took over after the Eagles first drive and played into the fourth quarter. McKee had two fantastic games to start the preseason slate, but Thursday was a little tougher for him and the Eagles. He was 19/34 for 158 yards but never got Philly into the end zone, settling for just two field goals in the first half.
The best either side looked came after the break when the Colts put Gardner Minshew in under center and he marched Indy down the field and hit for an 8 yard TD after a 11 play 75 yard drive following the halftime break. He finished the night 9/11 for 102 yards and a TD after two possessions.
Cutdown day coming
Sam Elingher finished off the game, and had the Colts in the red zone but an interception put a damper on his night. He finished 6/8 for 86 yards and an INT.
The next order of business for these two teams is trimming their rosters down to 53 men and then they can set their sights on Week 1 of the NFL regular season.
The Colts offense look at it's best with Gardner Minshew in the game. He started the second half and led Indy down the field for a TD on the opening drive of the third quarter. He went 9/11 for 102 yards including this TD pass to Kenyon Drake.
The Colts second TD drive started at their 25 yard line and Richardson led Indy down the field setting up this 1 yard Evan Hull TD run.
A turnover on downs gave Anthony Richardson and the Colts great field position and Deon Jackson finished off the drive from three yards out.
Trey Sermon punched in the 1 yard TD, but struggled throughout the night gaining just 30 yards on 16 carries.
The Eagles started off the game with a bang as Devon Allen returned the opening kick 73 yards to set up the first and only TD for the Eagles.

WE ARE UNDERWAY FROM PHILLY!!!
The Eagles get the ball to start the game and they will have most of their starters on the sidelines all night as they prepare for Week 1.
It’s the day that every football player has either dreaded or dreamed about depending on what side of the cut list they are on. NFL teams used to have to cut down the roster gradually over the course of the preseason, which was four games long. Now there are just three games, and instead of having cuts after every preseason game, teams get to take up to 90 players to all three games, but will have to trim their roster down to 53 by the 29th of August. Tonight is the last chance for a lot of the guys on the field today. Once the third and fourth quarter roll around, don’t switch off. Guys will be playing for their football lives in what could be their last NFL action ever.
Hurts sighting?
Will he or won’t he? We have yet to see Jalen Hurts this preseason, and with good reason. Superstar quarterbacks don’t usually see too much action in the preseason, if any and Hurts is now considered a superstar quarterback after leading the Eagles to the the Super Bowl in his third year in the league. Since there are only three preseason games there seems to be a bit more sense of urgency around the league this year. Look at the Jets who are going to play Aaron Rodgers on Saturday. It wouldn’t come as too much of a surprise to see Hurts under center for at least a series or two.
Taylor shipping out of Indy?
One of the stories of the preseason is coming straight out of Indianapolis and it took another turn this week. Jonathan Taylor was not offered the contract that he was looking for this offseason, and has been holding out until a new contract is presented. He asked for a trade a month ago, which was originally denied after a meeting with owner Jim Irsay, but since then he has been given the green light to seek a trade. It’s said the Colts are looking for a first round draft pick in exchange, which many teams will be willing to give up for the rushing TD leader from two years ago.
Richardson shocked starter
It took just three possessions for the Colts to name Anthony Richardson the starting quarterback in Week 1. It was far from an impressive performance for the Colts’ rookie QB who threw an interception on just his third throw of Indy’s first drive in Buffalo. The next two drive resulted in a missed field goal and a three and out. All in all the third overall draft pick went 7/12 for 67 yards and an interception before being named QB1. Obviously Frank Reich and the rest of the Colts coaching staff have had a better look at Richardson during practice, but the rookie still told reporters he was “shocked” to be handed the starting job so early.
Eagles in the crosshairs
Philly came in under the radar last year. Not many expected them to finish the season in Arizona playing the Chiefs in Super Bowl LVII. They rattled off their first eight games of the season and with every win, expectation began to grow in the City of Brotherly Love. This year, expectations couldn’t be any higher. Jalen Hurts and the the receiving corp are perfectly complemented with a ferocious defense that seems to only be getting better. The question coming into the season is how the Eagles handle the pressure having the bullseye on their back all year.
Turmoil at Lucas Oil
The Colts situation is a bit of a mess right now. There is a rookie quarterback and their start running back looks like he could be either on his way out or holding out for the foreseeable future. The one good thing about the situation in Indianapolis is, there is nowhere to go but up at Lucas Oil Stadium.
Eagles last game
For the second straight week the Eagles are playing on Thursday night after tying the Cleveland Browns 18-18 form Philly. Marcus Mariota the the Eagles got off to a rough start after giving up a safety on their opening possession. It wouldn’t get much prettier until after the halftime break, as Mariota led just one field goal drive on the only drive that entered the Browns half of the field. Tanner McKee turned things around for the Eagles, leading an opening possession TD drive and a game tying fourth quarter TD drive with a Two Point Conversion to tie the game at 18-18. Cleveland’s Caden York missed a 41 yard go-ahead field goal right after the Two Minute Warning and the two teams shared the spoils in Week 2 of the preseason.
Colts last game
Anthony Richardson sat the Colts Week 2 game after being named the starter after just a few series in Indy’s opening game of preseason. Instead it was Garner Minshew who got the start against the Bears at Lucas Oil Stadium. The Colts scored just one touchdown in the first half, but Minshew went 13/15 for 107 yards and his TD pass to Juwann Winfree. The Bears would score on the next possession and rattle off 17 straight points, looking like they were well on their way to victory, but Sam Elingher led a fantastic comeback, scoring two TDs in a matter of four minutes, and a forced fumble led to a Matt Gay game tying field goal to secure the win.
We are live from Lincoln Financial Field
Hello everyone and welcome to Philly where the Eagles will be gearing up for the regular season hoping for a repeat run to the Super Bowl. While they are stronger in some areas this year, there is still room for improvement in others. It will be one last chance for players who are on the fringe of a roster spot to impress for both the Eagles and Colts players. The guys down the depth chart aren’t the only ones who’s future is uncertain in Indy, their star running back could be on his way out in the not so distant future. One thing that isn’t in question is who will be starting Week 1. Frank Reich has already named their rookie the starting QB for Week 1.
