Is Cam Newton planning a comeback to the NFL? What teams could be interested?

With reports suggesting that multiple record holder is looking to return to the NFL, we’re taking a look at some of the potential landing spots for one of the best dual-threat quarterbacks that we’ve ever seen in the league.

Cam Newton hopes to impress

According to reports, Cam Newton will be throwing at Auburn’s Pro Day. What that means is that Newton will have a chance to display his skill set with pro scouts in attendance. Should things go well, there is a good chance we could see the former MVP joining a team in the league ahead of the upcoming season.

As mentioned above, Newton is by far one of the best dual-threat QBs that we’ve had the chance to observe in quite some time. As the current record holder for the most rushing touchdowns by a quarterback with 75 and the most rushing touchdowns by a quarterback in a single season with 14, there isn’t a need for any further explanation. Across his 11-year career, he posted 32,382 passing yards for 194 touchdowns. As for his run game, we already mentioned his TD tally, but it’s worth mentioning that it came on the back of 5,628 yards. A three-time Pro Bowler as well as All-Pro, Newton is truly a complete QB. So, what happened?

Why was Cam Newton released and which team could he join?

While there is no doubt about Cam Newton’s skill set, there were definitely questions about his consistency, which were given further weight when he went 0-5 with the Carolina Panthers in 2021. At that point, Newton was released and we’ve not seen him since. What’s clear now is that he is intent on proving the doubters wrong, which in turn brings us to the question of what team could be a suitable destination for the now 33-year-old signal caller. To be clear, Newton is a proven winner and while there will be understandable doubts about his ability to justify a starting spot, it would be silly to think that he couldn’t be of great benefit to a team’s quarterback room. With that in mind, here are the teams we think could do with Newton on the roster:

Pittsburgh Steelers

For the moment, Kenny Pickett is the starting QB for the Steelers. Having used their first-round pick on the 24-year-old just last year, that’s not likely to change anytime soon. On the other hand, the team could definitely use some cover. If we take a look at the last campaign, Pickett completed 63% of his passes for 2,404 yards, seven touchdowns and nine interceptions. There were of course a number of injuries with which he had to contest, which in turn saw backup QB, Mitch Trubisky, step into the fray. In his five starts, Trubisky, posted a 2-3 record while throwing for 1,252 yards, four touchdowns and five interceptions. To conclude, it would be fair to say that Pickett probably has more to give than the injuries allowed him to show, but Trubisky’s efforts do indicate that a bit of cover could go a long way.

Tennessee Titans

Though it’s clear that Ryan Tannehill is the starter in Tennessee, it’s also clear that the Titans lack cover. Needless to say, were Tannehill to suffer an injury, the franchise would have a significant problem on their hands. Since joining the team in 2019, the 34-year-old has gone from a Pro-Bowl appearance in his first season, to an abysmal 2,536 yards for 13 touchdowns in the last campaign. Indeed, Tannehill’s yardage was the lowest since 2018 and his TD tally was the lowest since he entered the league. When Tannehill was ruled out by injury last year - he appeared in only 12 games - Malik Willis did little to justify his spot as the No. 2. Willis’ performances were so bad that the Titans were forced to turn to third string QB, Josh Dobbs at a late stage in the season. This is all to say, that one has to believe that if Tannehill has another off year, the franchise will have no choice but to consider other options. Cam Newton could well be that option.
