COWBOYS
Is CeeDee Lamb injured? Will he play against the Ravens in Week 3?
The Dallas Cowboys are falling apart. There were three important missing pieces in Wednesday’s practice that are adding to concerns ahead of Week 3 vs Ravens.
The Dallas Cowboys were given some positive injury news on Wednesday as tight end Jake Ferguson continues to make progress and cornerback DaRon Bland started his rehab process to eventually return to the field. However, with that good news also came some concerning news, as Dallas revealed that stars wide receiver CeeDee Lamb and cornerback Trevon Diggs, plus defensive tackle Mazi Smith all missed practice due to injuries.
On Wednesday, the Cowboys held their first Week 3 practice ahead of their game against the Baltimore Ravens this Sunday and the first since their brutal beating by the New Orleans Saints last week. They are hoping to make a comeback after the embarrassing home loss, but they’ll be in for a challenge against the reigning MVP Lamar Jackson, Pro Bowl running back Derrick Henry, and All-Pro linebacker Roquan Smith.
What injury does CeeDee Lamb have?
Dallas’ biggest offensive star CeeDee Lamb was held out of practice due to an ankle injury although specifics of the injury have not been revealed. It’s unclear how the injury occurred or how serious it is.
Fortunately though, it doesn’t look to be too bad. He was seen walking around without any issues and is still expected to play against the Ravens on Sunday, so we can assume his missing practice was just a precautionary measure.
Lamb is Prescott’s top target and best weapon. Against the Saints, he was targeted seven times and had four catches for 90 yards and their lone touchdown in the 44-19 loss.
Trevon Diggs and Mazi Smith miss out with injuries
On defense, the Cowboys need all the help they can get. It was their weakest point in the ugly loss to the Saints. So the fact that both CB Trevon Diggs and DT Mazi Smith missed practice on Wednesday does not feel good. Diggs is reportedly dealing with a foot injury while Smith has a back injury. Diggs is only just recently back after missing almost all of last season with an ACL injury. He made five tackles against the Saints.
Although ESPN’s Todd Archer reported that, like Lamb, Diggs is still expected to play on Sunday, Smith’s status for the game is not currently known. More clarity on the significance of all three of these injuries will likely be provided later today (Thursday) after the Cowboys’ padded practice.
Positive outlook for Ferguson and Bland
On a more positive note, tight end Jake Ferguson practiced for the first time since his MCL sprain in the Cowboys’ season opener against the Cleveland Browns. It looks like he’ll be able to make his return in Week 3 against the Ravens.
All-Pro cornerback DaRon Bland suffered from a stress fracture in his foot and has been recovering from surgery to fix it since the start of the season. Bland is a huge loss as he was last year’s leader in interceptions and set an NFL single-season record with five pick-sixes. On Wednesday, he returned to practice for the first time since the surgery and although he didn’t yet participate, he was seen doing rehab work and his presence is a good sign.
