Is Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski on the hot seat?
The Cleveland Browns are just 2-8 a season after making it to the playoffs, but their coach Kevin Stefanski isn’t worried about his job security.
Nothing has gone right for the Cleveland Browns this season. Now there are some fingers around Huntington Bank Field pointing the finger at the reigning NFL Coach of the Year, but Kevin Stefanski said he is not worried.
Stefanski not worried
After making an improbable playoff run last season, the Browns came into this year with high hopes for a return trip to the postseason. They got their $200 million dollar quarterback back from injury from the start of the season and had a defense that was among the best units in all of football last in 2023.
“I think probably because I grew up listening to [Philadelphia radio], I’m smart enough to not worry about outside noise,” Stefanski said. “I get that’s part of this gig. That’s life in the big city. My sole focus is getting this team ready to get a win on Thursday night. That’s it.”
Nothing has gone to plan for Stefanski or the Browns this season. Deshawn Watson was a sliver of the quarterback we saw in Houston before he was forced by the league to sit out due to off the field problems. He was starting to feel the pressure mounting after a 1-5 start to the season, and just when things couldn’t get worse Stefanski saw his QB1 go down with a torn achilles.
Same ole’ same ole’ in Cleveland
The defense is among the bottom third in the league in points per game, and Jameis Winston doesn’t appear to be the answer as the back up quarterback despite beating the Baltimore Ravens for one of their two wins on the season.
Both Stefanski and Andrew Berry were given contract extensions following the Browns unexpected run to the postseason with a veteran Joe Flacco leading the charge under center. It was just the fourth time the Browns finished above .500 in the 26 years since the team returned to Cleveland, but it has been a quick and dramatic fall from grace.
They will have to win would to avoid finishing .500 or worse, but it doesn’t get much easier after the Browns loss to New Orleans on Sunday. They have four division match ups remaining, two against the AFC North leading Steelers (one this Thursday), one against the Bengals and they will wrap up the season in Baltimore. The other three games are against the Broncos, Chiefs and resurgent Dolphins on the penultimate Sunday night of the regular season.
