Update:

The Dallas Cowboys have returned home to Texas to host the Los Angeles Chargers at AT&T Stadium this afternoon for the final game of the preseason. The drama surrounding the Cowboys this preseason has been the lack of contract extensions for quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb.

As they enter the final preseason game and with just 15 days to go until the regular season opener against the Cleveland Browns, the Cowboys still haven’t gotten the deals done. Lamb for his part has decided to hold out from training camp and offseason practices while he waits for a deal to get done, but Prescott has been a full participant in practices, minus a few days when he had some ankle soreness.

Prescott to sit out vs Chargers - Lance and Rush in

Although Prescott will be present at the game against the Chargers today, he is not expected to play. Dallas typically rests their starters throughout all of the preseason, but especially in the last game, they don’t want to take any injury risks.

Prescott actually has not played in a preseason game at all since 2019. Still, he may play a role in today’s game as the playcaller. He did so in last year’s preseason finale when the Cowboys beat the Raiders 31-16.

“Once again, it’s preseason football. Those guys gave us three coverages on the other side,” said Prescott. “I’m not going to sit here on my high horse like I just called the Super Bowl or something. It was a game and it was fun. It was fun to do and it was fun to experience that.”

That leaves Trey Lance and Cooper Rush in at quarterback today, to continue their battle for the spot behind Prescott. Owner Jerry Jones confirmed earlier this week that Lance will definitely be a part of the final 53-man roster, which has to be decided by Tuesday afternoon, but it’s not clear if he or Rush will be the QB2 or the emergency QB3.
