Jacksonville Jaguars trade for more depth amidst uncertainty at wide receiver position
The Jacksonville Jaguars traded a 2026 sixth round pick for Tim Patrick hoping to strengthen their WR corp and add a little depth for QB Trevor Lawrence.
The Jacksonville Jaguars are desperately thin at the wide receiver position coming into the new campaign. That’s why they went out and selected a wide receiver with the third pick in the draft, but that apparently wasn’t enough, so here comes Tim Patrick.
Jags add to thin WR corp
Former Detroit Lion, Tim Patrick, was traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars a day after teams in the league had to trim their rosters down to 53 players. The Lion sent Patrick to the Jags in exchange for a sixth round pick in next year’s draft.
This will be a welcomed addition to a Jaguars team that has a franchise quarterback in Trevor Lawrence. Unfortunately for Lawrence he hasn’t had much for weapons over the last few years. Last year they drafted Brian Thomas Jr. who looks to be a budding star in the league. He had 1,282 yards and 10 TDs in his rookie season
For the second straight season the Jags took a wide receiver in the first round, selecting Travis Hunter from the University of Colorado. Hunter, who is the reigning Heisman Trophy winner, plans on playing both offense and defense at the next level, just like he did in college.
How much can Hunter play both ways?
Hunter has shown the ability to play both ways, and is intent on doing so, but not even his own coach knows how much he will be able to play essentially the entire game. First year Jags coach Liam Coen admitted, “We don’t know how many snaps he can truly go play in a game on both side of the ball.”
Patrick comes into Jacksonville figuring to be the third WR option, despite dealing with a handful of injury problems over the last few years. In 2022 Patrick missed the entire season with a torn ACL and the next year he tore his Achilles which kept him out all of the 2023 season.
Last year he was reincorporated in the Lions offense, playing a small role on a team that had plenty of options on the receiving end. He had 394 yards and three TDs in 16 games, and will look get even more involved in the Jags offense.
