Jacksonville Jaguars 19 vs 3 New York Jets summary: stats and highlights | Week 16
The Jacksonville Jaguars stay alive in the AFC playoff race after defeating the New York Jets in the Meadowlands on Thursday Night. The Jags defense dominated all night long, keeping the Jets out of the end zone in the 19-3 victory from MetLife Stadium.
No room for error
It was a must win game for both teams who came into Week 16 on the outside of the playoff picture looking in. The team that won the Thursday Night throwdown would continue dreaming of a postseason appearance, while the loser would see their playoff door almost certainly shut.
Neither team were particularly impressive on the offensive end, but the Jets could not move the ball with Zach Wilson under center. Wilson was starting for a second straight week after Matt White fractured three ribs in the game against the Bills two weeks ago. Wilson wouldn't last until the end of the game.
The Jags night got started in horrendous fashion after Trevor Lawrence was strip sacked by Quinnen Williams deep in Jacksonville territory and the Jets recovered the ball with fantastic field position on thier first drive. Wilson and the Jets were stopped three plays later and New York was held to a field goal. That was a sign of things to come for the Jets offense for the rest of the night.
Jags 96 yard TD drive makes differnce
Trevor Lawrence had the Jags offense marching down the field on a regular basis, but Jacksonville settle for a few more field goals than they would have liked. The one touchdown drive started inside their 5 yard line, and Lawrence and running back Trevor Etienne marched the Jaguars down the field on a 15 play, 96 yard TD drive which was finished off with a Lawrence QB leap inside the one yard line.
After another Jags field goal the victors lead 13-3 and the Jets had gained just 66 yard of total offense. After two three-and-outs to start the second half, Jets head coach Robert Saleh benched Wilson, who went 9/18 for 92 yards, and put Chris Streveler under center. On his first drive Streveler picked up three first downs as many as the Jets had all game but New York was eventually turn the ball over on downs.
New York would have one more chance to get back in the game after the Jags continued to struggle to close out the the Jets. With just over five minutes left Streveler had his offense moving down the field again but a Garrett Wilson fumble ended their chances of any late game heroics.
Jags eyeing Titans top spot in AFC South
The Jags would add another field goal just for insurance as Lawrence went 20/31 for 229 and added another 51 on the ground on seven carries. Travis Etienne was the work horse on Thursday night, carrying the ball 22 times for 83 yards, and catching three passes for another 29 yards.
The Jags go into the final two weeks of the season knowing they control their own destiny in the AFC South. They play the Texans next week, and then could be looking at a win or go home game against the Titans on the last week of the season.
After extending the lead with a couple more field goals, the Jets had one last gasp effort for a TD with Chris Streveler in at QB after Zach Wilson got benched. Garrett Wilson made the 4th down catch, but then had the ball kicked out of his hands and Tre Herndon made the recovery to seal the deal in the Meadowlands.
The Jags would tie the game up after their early fumble, and then Trevor Lawrence and Travis Etienne would drive the offense down the field on a 15 play, 96 yard drive capped off by this QB leap from an inch away from the Goal Line.
On the first series of the game the Jets would have their only highlight of the night. Quinnen Williams broke into the backfield and strip sacked Trevor Lawrence. The Jets could only score a field goal from deep in JAX territory, and that would be a sign of things to come for the NY offense.

The Jags moved the ball with ease in the first half, but settled for three field goals, one of which was missed late in the second quarter, but Lawrence punched in the game's only TD early in the 2nd quarter.
The only highlight of the Jets first half was the fumble that Quinnen Williams had on Lawrence on the first drive.

According to Bet365.com the Jets are 2.5 point favorites at home and the Over/Under is set at 36.5.
That's not a lot of points, but with the wind and the rain expected in the Meadownlands, I'm taking the under.
Wilson under the lights and the microscope
The Jets don’t have much of an option, but to go with their second year quarterback who came under fire after the Jets 10-3 loss to the New England Patriots a month ago. A press conference in which he was hesitant to take blame for the offensive struggles against the Pats left him at odds with some of his teammates resulted in the second year QB getting benched. He came back under center and threw for 317 yards, two TDs and an interception in the Lions loss last week. Tonight he will be back under center in a must win game in front of his home fans, many of which turned against him after that post game interview.
T Law in NY
Trevor Lawrence is hitting stride at just the right time after a slow start to the season. In his last six games, he has thrown for 14 TDs and just 1 interception to lead this renaissance in Jacksonville. His pick against the Cowboys last week was his first since the day before Halloween.
AFC Standings
Mathematically this isn’t a must win for the Jets at 7-7, but at 6-8 the Jags need to win this game to stay in contention for the Wild Card and the AFC South. They trail the Titans by a game, and their Week 18 matchup against Tennessee could be the determining factor that decides who moves on out of that division. At the moment the Ravens, Chargers and Dolphins currently have the three Wild Card spots going into Week 16, but the Jets and the Jags are right on their tails.

Jets back in the Meadowlands
The Jets are back in the Meadowlands for the second straight week and looking to get back in the good graces of the fans who watched them blow a late lead to the Lions last week. The Grinch, Quincy Williams, is going to have to be at his meanest tonight for New York to have a chance tonight against a Jags team that is on a mission to reach the postseason.
Jags in the building
Jacksonville knows they are playing for their season tonight on the road in the Meadowlands, and Trevor Lawrence is coming into tonight with the spotlight shined directly on him. He is in his sophomore season, and this is without question the biggest game of his young career.
Jets need to bounce back
The Jets were playing catch up with the Lions for most of the game last week, and finally took the lead with under five minutes in the fourth quarter. That was too much time to leave on the clock for Jared Goff and Detroit who drove down the field and on a 4th and 1 Goff hit Brock Wright on a 51 yard catch and run that the TE took to the house to take the lead with 1:49 left in the fourth. Zach Wilson, who was filling in for the injured Mike White, drove the the Jets to the DET 40 yard line to set up a 58 yard Greg Zuerlein field goal which sailed wide left and New York dropped to 7-7 on the year.
Jags win it at the death
Jacksonville had a must win game against one of the hottest teams in the league as the Dallas Cowboys came to town and the Jags came out on top in a shoot out. The Jaguars went down 21-7 at half and scored 27 second half points to force the game into overtime, and in the overtime session Rayshawn Jenkins picked off Dak Prescott for the second time. Jenkins made the shoestring catch and took it to the house to keep the Jags playoff chances alive.
