Jaguars place Trevor Lawrence on IR after concussion - who will replace the quarterback?
Having suffered a concussion in an illegal hit by the Texans’ Azeez Al-Shaair, Lawrence is unlikely to feature again this season.
Trevor Lawrence’s season is likely over after the Jacksonville Jaguars today placed the quarterback on the injured reserve list (IR), following the concussion he suffered in Sunday’s Week 13 defeat to the Houston Texans.
Lawrence suffered the brain injury after receiving an illegal hit by Texans linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair, who has been given a three-game ban for the offense.
When can Lawrence return from IR?
According to NFL rules, players placed on the IR must sit out at least four games before they can return to action. What’s more, Lawrence must pass the league’s strict, five-step concussion protocol before being cleared to play.
With only five weeks left in the regular season, and the Jaguars already eliminated from playoff contention, Lawrence appears almost certain not to play again this season.
Lawrence started 10 games in 2024, throwing for just 2,045 yards, 11 touchdowns and seven interceptions after completing 60.6% of his passes. He also ran for 119 yards and three touchdowns.
Who will the Jaguars’ new starting QB be?
With Lawrence unavailable to head coach Doug Pederson, Mac Jones is set to step up as the Jaguars’ starting quarterback for the remainder of the season.
The former New England Patriot also replaced Lawrence in Weeks 10 and 11, after the former Clemson Tigers star was ruled out with a shoulder injury.
So far this season, Jones has thrown for 512 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions. The Jaguars lost both games he has started this year.
When is the Jaguars' next game?
In Week 14, the 2-10 Jaguars visit the Tennessee Titans on Sunday. Kick-off at Nissan Stadium is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. ET/10:00 a.m. PT, and viewers in the US can watch the game on CBS.
