Update:

It was going to be the saga of the offseason in Cincinnati. How were the Bengals going to keep Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins as they try to keep this team together and make another Super Bowl push with both WRs due for a new deal?

Bengals about their business

As soon as the Bengals season officially ended, crashing out of the postseason picture due to a slow start to the season, attention turned to their star pass catchers. Everyone knew there was a possibility of both Higgins and Chase walking.

There was a real possibility of both of them leaving Paycor Stadium, but Joe Burrow expressed his desire to keep his favorite targets around for at least another year. Things got a little ugly at the start of last season when Chase held out of preseason, and as a result the Bengals offense struggled to start the season.

Cincy lost their first three and four of their first five before turning things around, but by that time it was too late. Their offense kicked in to gear and Joe Burrow ended up having the best season of his career and Chase won the triple crown for wide receivers finishing top in the NFL in receptions (127), receiving yards (1,708) and touchdown receptions (17).

Chase won’t be distracted in Cincy

After the best season any one in a Bengals uniform has ever had, the front offices knew they couldn’t let one of the WRs, if not the best WR in the league, walk out the door. First they franchise tagged Tee Higgins before agreeing on a new four year deal for their WR2. Then came Ja’marr Chase’s record setting deal.

Chase became the highest paid non-quarterback in league history when he signed the four-year, $161 million contract extension that will keep him in Cincy and allow the Bengals to focus on getting that elusive Super Bowl.

Chase said he likes being in Cincinnati and he is happy to be there for the long run because there aren’t many distractions in the city that he has called home for the last four years. “For me, I like Cincinnati because it gives me the opportunity to come here and focus,” Chase said. “You know, I’m not distracted out here. It’s not . . . too many things to get me off pace out out here, you know, and it’s strictly what I’m focused on. And that’s really tunnel vision for me to play football. So, I mean, at the end of the day, the food’s not the best. We can work out that, but . . . . I’m from New Orleans, I’m not used to the food yet. But, you know, overall, I mean, honestly, I just think that’s the biggest picture for me. Is that, you know, I don’t have no distractions here. I can just play football.”
