Update:

The Kansas City Chiefs are reportedly ready to move on from right tackle Jawaan Taylor, letting him know that he’d be released before the start of the league year, unless a trade comes up first.

The move saves Kansas City approximately $20 million in salary cap space ahead of the new league year. The Chiefs entered the offseason significantly over the cap, so having that flexibility is critical. But money isn’t the only factor.

Why the Chiefs are releasing Jawaan Taylor

The cap crunch

The Chiefs have been trimming salary aggressively. They’ve restructured contracts and released veterans to get under the cap before the March 11 deadline.

Taylor had one year remaining on a four-year, $80 million deal. Cutting him clears significant room and allows Kansas City to pursue free agents or extend core players. Freeing up $20 million makes a big difference in tight cap situations like theirs.

The penalty problem

Taylor’s tenure in Kansas City was productive in pass protection, but unfortunately quite frustrating in discipline. He committed 49 penalties (41 accepted) in 45 games with the Chiefs, the most among NFL linemen during that span.

While his pass-blocking efficiency remained solid, the pre-snap flags became a recurring storyline. Penalties alone wouldn’t necessarily justify Taylor’s release, but combined with the cap savings, they are likely factored into the equation.

The Mahomes factor

Here’s where it gets complicated. Patrick Mahomes is coming off ACL and LCL injuries so protecting him is priority No. 1. Taylor had been a steady presence at right tackle. Releasing him introduces uncertainty at a critical position. The Chiefs appear to believe they can find a cheaper alternative either in free agency or the draft, but it’s a risk.
