Update:

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones found himself in the spotlight during Sunday’s 37-22 win over the New York Jets, but not just because of the score. A viral video showed Jones from his MetLife Stadium luxury box appearing to flash a middle finger toward fans, followed by a playful point and smile.

Jerry Jones has interesting explanation for his viral middle finger salute to Jets fans

A win over the now 0-5 Jets is hardly one to boast about, but Jones was clearly feeling good after just the Cowboys’ second victory this season. While it’s hard to deny that flipping the bird is exactly what he’s doing in the video, Jones defended himself, but not by denying the gesture...

Jones admitted that he indeed was raising his middle fingers, but he claims that it was an accident, and that he had intended to give a thumbs-up instead. Yes, yes...I can see how that could get confusing.

“That was unfortunate,” Jones told 105.3 The Fan. “That was kind of an exchange with our fans out in front of us. There was a swarm of Cowboys fans out in front, not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The entire stadium was brimming with enthusiasm of Cowboys and certainly late in the game.”

“[The gesture] was inadvertent on my part because that was right after we made our last touchdown, and we were all excited about it,” he said. “There wasn’t any antagonistic issue or anything like that. I just put up the wrong show on the hand. That was inadvertently done. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it accidental, you can call it accidental. But it got straightened around pretty quick. I had a chance to look at it. It got straightened out pretty quick, but the intention was ‘thumbs up,’ and basically pointing at our fans because everybody was jumping up and down excited.”

While the moment may seem lighthearted to him, it might not seem that way to the league. The NFL notably gave a $250,000 fine to late Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams in 2009 for a similar incident. It remains to be seen whether the league will take action against Jones or simply chalk it up to a misunderstanding from one of football’s most recognizable owners.
