Jerry Jones deflects question about empty seats at Cowboys' AT&T Stadium

The Cowboys are having one of their worst seasons in 10 years, so it’s no surprise the stadium is not as packed, especially considering their home record.

The Dallas Cowboys have been average or bad for the last few decades, not having had postseason success in nearly 30 years. You could argue that they were actually a pretty good team at times (they did go 12-5 for the last three straight seasons), but without a Super Bowl appearance or even an NFC Title in 29 years, it would be a difficult case to make. Regular season success only counts for so much.

But this season is something else. At 3-7 and with a brand new NFL record of six straight home losses in which they trailed by 20+ points, the Cowboys are playing some of their worst football in the last 10 years.

What will it take for Jerry to make changes?

When almost everything that led to this point can be traced back to the owner, it’s tough to see anything improving in the future. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has a hard time either seeing things realistically or admitting mistakes and making changes.

Monday’s 34-10 loss to the Houston Texans was the Cowboys' fifth straight loss at home and the frustration from fans is blatant. Whereas AT&T Stadium used to be one of the most difficult for opposing teams to play in due to the amount of fans, noise levels, and success of the home team, it’s now become a desolate, sad place.

Sunday’s game at the Cowboys' AT&T Stadium was full of empty seats and Texans fans. Of course, after five straight beatings in their home stadium, I would not want to attend either. If anything can convince Jerry to make a change, I’d think it would be losing money and apathy from fans.

But alas, when the topic was brought up to him, Jerry simply started reminiscing on the past, convinced that things will inevitably get better again as part of some magical, cyclical way of the world. No change necessary.

“(Over the last 25 years), we’ve been the sixth-winningest team in the NFL. In the last 15 years, we’re the fifth-winningest team in the NFL. We haven’t been to the championship playoff game. We haven’t been to a Super Bowl, but we’ve been (hanging) around that rim. And we’ve been up there with the best of them.”

“... Rest assured we’ll be figuring out ways to look for what we’re doing wrong and improve on that. ... The bottom line is that we’ve got to get better. We will get better. There are better days ahead,”said Jones.

What’s incredible as well is that Jerry thinks the Cowboys have been “hanging around the rim” of a Super Bowl when they haven’t even been able to win an NFC Championship game since 1995. It’s time for Jerry to wake up and admit that the Cowboys need to make major changes in order to start actually seeing real success, not just “up there” with the teams that keep besting them.
