Back up quarterback Josh Johnson took over from Brock Purdy for the 49ers in the 1st quarter in the NFC Championship match against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Purdy’s arm was hit by the Eagles’ Reddick as he threw the ball, leading to a fumble and the Eagles recovering the ball, but worse news for the 49ers was that Purdy’s arm was injured by the knock. The franchise confirmed it was an elbow injury to his right arm.

The 49ers had hoped Purdy might be back for the second half, but Johnson started the first drive after half-time, though he later came off concussed. The 49ers slumped to a 31-7 defeat.

Purdy receives medical attention after being sacked

Purdy sought medical attention, with Johnson standing in for him. On his first drive, Reddick sacked Johnson at 2nd and 6 on the 49ers 24 line, before San Francisco then committed a delay of game penalty and ended up punting.

Josh Johnson has played with 14 different teams in his 15 years in the NFL, a league record. He joined the 49ers from the Denver Broncos in 2022.

Johnson fumbles snap after Eagles’ second TD

Straight after the Eagles made it 14-7 with their second TD, from Sanders, the 49ers were left with 1:36 to try and cut the deficit before half-time, but having got a 1st down Johnson then fumbled a perfectly good snap, and the Eagles Reddick came up with the ball for the turnover. The Eagles then doubled down on Johnson’s pain, running in for their third touchdown before half-time.

Purdy takes back over when Johnson checked for concussion

At the start of the second half, Johnson was knocked to the turf as he released the ball and he banged his head, leading to a requirement he be checked for concussion. Purdy came back on, though on his first snap he handed off to McCaffrey rather than throwing, and when he did throw he did so gingerly.
